But different men often see the same subject in
2、 different lights; and, therefore, I hope it will not be thought disrespectful to those gentlemen if, entertaining as I do opini ons of a character very oppo site to theirs, I shall sp eak forth my sentiments freely and without reserve.This is no time for ceremony. The questing before theHouse is on
3、e of awful moment to this country. For my own part, I consider it as nothing less than a question of freedom or slavery; and in prop ortion to the magnitude of the subject ought to be the freedom of theat truth, and fulfilldebate. It is only in this way that we can hope to arrivethe great responsibi
4、litywhichwe hold to God and our country. Should I kee p back my opini ons at such a time, through fear of giving offense , I should consider myself as guilty of treason towards my country, and of an act of disloyalty toward the Majesty of Heaven, whichI revere above all earthly kings.Mr. P resident,
5、 it is natural to man to indulge in the illusions of hope. We are apt to shut our eyes against a p ainful truth, and listen to the song of that siren till she transforms us into beasts. Is this the part of wise men, engaged in a great and arduous struggle for liberty? Are we disposed to be of the nu
6、mber of those who, having eyes, see not, and, having ears, hear not, the things which so nearly concern their temporal salvation ? For my part,whatever anguish of spiritit may cost, I amwilling to know the whole truth; to know the worst, and to p rovide for it.I have but one lam p by which my feet a
7、re guided, andthat is the lamp of exp erience. I know of no way ofjudging of the future but by the p ast. And judging bythe p ast, I wish to know what there has been in theconduct of the Britishministry for the last tenyears to justify those hopes with which gentlemenhave been pl eased to solace the
8、mselves and the House.Is it thatinsidious smile with which our p etitionhas been lately received? Trust it not, sir; it willprove a snare to your feet. Suffer not yourselves tobe betrayed with a kiss. Ask yourselves how thisgracious rece ption of our p etitioncomp orts withthose warlike prep aration
9、s which cover our waters anddarken our land. Are fleets and armies necessary to awork of love andreconciliation ? Have we shownourselves so unwilling to be reconciled that forcemust be called in to win back our love? Let us notdeceive ourselves, sir. These are theimp lements ofwar and subjugation ;
10、the last arguments to which kingsresort. I ask gentlemen, sir, what meansthis martial array, if its purpose be not to forceus to submission ? Can gentlemen assign any otherpossiblemotive for it? Has Great Britain any enemy, in this quarter of the world, to call for all this accumulation of navies an

No, sir, she has none.They are meant for us: they can be meant for no other.They are sent over to bind and rivet upon us those chains which the British ministry have been so long forging. And what have we to opp ose to them? Shall we try argument? Sir, we have been trying that for the last
12、 ten years. Have we anything new to offer upon the subject? Nothing. We have held the subject up in every light of which it is cap able; but it has been all in vain. Shall we resortexhausted ?to entreaty and humble supp lication ? What termsLet us not, Ishall we find which have not been alreadybesee
13、ch you, sir, deceive ourselves.Sir, we have done everything that could be done to avert the storm which is now coming on. We havep etitioned; we have remonstrated ; weourselveshave supp licated ; we have p rostratedbefore the throne, and haveimploreditsinter po sition to arrest the tyrannical hands
14、of theministry and P arliament. Our p etitions have beenslighted; ourremonstrances have p roducedadditional violence and insult; our supplicationshavebeen disregarded; and we have beenspurned , withconte mpt, from the foot of the throne! In vain, afterthese things, may we indulge the fond hope of pe
15、ace andreconciliation. There is no longer any room for hope.If we wish to be free- if we mean topreserveinviolate those inestimableprivilegesforwhich we have been so long contending-if we mean notbasely to abandon the noble struggle in which we havebeen so long engaged, and which we have pl edgedour
16、selves never to abandon until the glorious objectof our contest shall be obtained-we must fight! Irep eat it, sir, we must fight! An app eal to arms andto the God of hosts is all that is left us!They tell us, sir, that we are weak; unable to cope withso formidable an adversary . But when shall we be
17、stronger? Will it be the next week, or the next year?Will it be when we are totallydisarmed , and when aBritish guard shall be stationed in every house? Shallwe gather strength byirresolutionand inaction?Shall we acquire the means of effectual resistance bylying supi nely on our backs and huggingthe
18、 delusivep hantom of hope, until our enemiesshall have bound us hand and foot? Sir, we are notweakif we make a proper use of those means which the Godof nature hath pl aced in our po wer. The millions ofpeople, armed in the holy cause of liberty, and insucha country as that which we possess, are inv
19、inciblebyany force which our enemy can send against us. Besides,sir, we shall not fight our battles alone. There is ajust God who p resides over the destinies of nations,and who will raise up friends to fight our battles forus. The battle, sir, is not to the strong alone; it isto the vigilant , the
20、active, the brave. Besides, sir,we have no election. If we were base enough to desireit, it is now too late to retire from the contest. Thereis no retreat but in submission and slavery! Our chainsare forged! Their clanking may be heard on the pl ainsof Boston! The war is inevitable-and let it come!

22、dle? What is it that gentlemenwish? What would they have? Is life so dear, or p eaceso sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains andslavery? Forbid it,Almighty God! 24、希望的幻觉是人的天性。我们有闭目不愿正视痛苦现实的倾向,有倾听女海妖的惑人歌声的倾 向,可那是能将人化为禽兽的惑人的歌声。这难道是在这场 为获得自由而从事的艰苦卓绝的斗争中,一个聪明人所应持 的态度吗?难道我们愿意做那种对这关系到是否蒙受奴役的大问题视而不见充耳不闻的人吗?就我个人而论,无论在精神上承受任何痛苦,我也愿意知道真理,知道最坏的情况, 并为之做好一切准备。我只有一盏指路明灯,那就是经验之灯,除了以往的经验以外,我不知道还有什么更好的方法来判断未来。而即要 以过去的经验为依据, 我倒希望知道,10年来英国政府的所 作所为中有哪一点足以证明先生们用以欣然安慰自己及各 位代表的和平希望呢
