1、第11讲数字的翻译在英汉商务翻译中经常遇到数字以及数字相关的材料，比方整数、小数、分 数、百分比、倍数，增加、较少、猛增、猛将、缓增、缓降、容积的单位、面积 的单位、重量的单位、长度的单位、距离的单位。在翻译数字和数字相关文资料 时必须秉承严谨的态度，否那么很有可能给客户造成重大的损失。一、整数的翻译英文读数字的习惯是把数字分为每三位一组。100往左数第一位读成 thousand（千），然后每隔两位的位数有名称，分别为million（百万）,billion（十亿）和 trillion（万亿）。其余的位数没名称，以多少多少个thousand, million, billion和 trillioi

2、n来读。比方在英语里10000就是10个thousand,因此读作ten thousand; 1000亿等于100个十亿，因此读作one hundred billion.10 0 00000 0 0000Trillionbillionmillionthousandhundred而汉语读数字的习惯一般有两种，一种是数位不分组，从又至左挨着读成“个、 十、百、千、万、十万、百万、千万、亿、十亿、百亿、千亿、万亿九另一种 读法是把数字分成每四位一组来读。第一组可以按照从右至左“个、十、百、千” 来读；到了第二组就可以直接读成多少多少万；第三组就直接读成多少多少亿; 第四组就读作多少多少万亿。这样分组

3、会加快用中文识别数字的进度。1000000000000万亿千亿百亿十亿亿千万百万十万万千百十个数字英译汉时一定要注意不能把英文的基本数位记错了，更不能写错了。比 如把million翻译为“亿”,把billion翻译成为“百万”。例 1： In 2011, we continued to create better ways to capture global growth opportunities, always with a focus on meeting our customersexpectations. Our revenues reached $18.3 billion.译文：2

4、011年，我们继续创新以抓住全球成长机遇，重点一直在于满足客户期 望。我们的年收入到达了 183亿美元。分析：其实只要牢牢记住billion是十亿就可以很快翻译出数字，数字8位于 billion,也就是8十亿，8左边是百亿，8右边是亿，所以这个数字就是183亿。彳列 2： Our order backlog grew to $53.9 billion, ensuring visibility of future revenues. Free cash flow usage totaled $1.2 billion, resulting in a cash position of $3.4 bi

5、llion at year-end.译文：未完成订单增长至539美元，使未来收入明朗化。净现金流使用到达12 亿美元，年底现金状况达34亿美元。分析：这句话里的backlog是积压的工作、待办的工作。Order backlog指的就是 积压起来还没有交付的订单。例 3： Our long-term growth forecast of 24,000 aircraft deliveries in the next 20 years is based on our monitoring of long-term market drivers.译文：我们的远期成长预测是20年以内交付2万4000架飞

6、机。这一预测的基础 是我们对于远期市场驱动因素的监测。分析：本句的数字比拟简单。有一个词driver比拟重要，指的是驱动力、驱动因 素。意思跟powerhouse, propeller比拟接近。而它的动词形式drive可以当驱动讲， 比方“As an accomplished entrepreneur, you are still work 7 days a week, 18 hours a day. What is driving you now?”您已经是成功的企业家，但每天工作18个小 时每天无休。是什么在驱动您这样工作？ ”例 4： Starwood Hotels & Resorts

7、Worldwide Inc. is one of the leading hotel and leisure companies in the world with more than 1,200 properties in some 100 countries and over 180,000 employees at its owned and managed properties. o译文：喜达屋酒店和度假村是一家全球领先的酒店和休闲活动公司，在全球100 多个国家房产达1200处，所属和管理的房产雇佣员工人数达18万人。分析：这句话的基本结构是“Starwood Hotels & Re

8、sorts Worldwide Inc. is a company”，后面接了 with带了房产数量、房产分布国家数量和员工数量，这种 情况通常把with翻译成“有、拥有”,相当于“to have，“to own，“to boast，“to embrace”的 意思。二、小数、百分数和分数的翻译小数可以在翻译的时候直接誉抄下来，但要注意小数在英语里的读法。比方 0.3 可以读作 zero point three,或者 point three,又或者 naught point three。止匕夕卜如 果小数点后面多于一个零，比方0.003就应该读作zero/point/naught point

9、O O three。英译汉时百分数就直接译为“百分之”，或者写符号“”。比方4.08%就可以 翻译为 four point O eight percento分数可以译做“几分之几”，或者直接写成阿拉伯数字。但是要注意英语里分 数的读法。分子读基数词，分母读序数词。比方：1/3读成。ne third, 3/10读作 three tenths, 1 2/7读作one and two sevenths。另外，有些分数比拟复杂，比方分 子、分母或者两者都比拟大，这种时候分子和分母都读成基数，中间用and连接。 比方：22/745 就可以读成 twenty two over seven hundred

10、and forty five 或者 twenty two over seven four five,也就是说这种情况下分母可以按照直数的一般读法， 也可以一位一位的单独读成数字。例 1： In the past few years, we have strengthened the operational fundamentals of the business through continuous focus on key performance indicators and have improved on-time delivery of our aircraft by 52 perce

11、ntage points o译文：几年以来，通过对主要业绩指标的持续关注，我们增强了业绩基础，还把 飞机的准时交付率提高了 52个百分点。分析：本句数字简单。值得注意的是fundamental这个词在这里不是形容词，而 是名词，意思是基本原理、基本原那么、基础。例 2： The real GDP growth from calendar years 2003 to 2007 averaged 3.6% per year. Over this same period, the business aircraft market saw strong order intake. In their F

12、ebruary 2012 World Overview Report forecast an average annual worldwide real GDP growth rate of 3.2% per year over the next 20 years, which should enable healthy market conditions译文：2003至2007财政年度实际GDP增长为年均3.6%,商务飞机市场接受订 单量大。2012年商务飞机概览报告预测，未来20年世界年均国内生产总值增长 率为3.2%,能够确保市场健康。分析：这段数字不难。需要注意的是average的用法

13、。本句出现了两个average,第 一个是动词，第二个是形容词。Average当动词用没有当形容词普遍，主要用法 就是主语+average,表示平均。还有real GDP,就是实际国内生产总值经常跟 nominal GDP,就是名义国内生产总值并用。例 3： Regulation continues to loom large - in fact, 83% are extremely5 or somewhat concerned that over-regulation could threaten growth.译文：管理问题继续凸显一实际上83%的人“非常”或“有些“担忧过度管理可能 会威

14、胁增长。分析：本句数字如实翻译即可。重点在于loom large这个词，在商务文体运用比 较广泛，意思是凸显。比方“Unpaid mortgage principal will loom very large.”“未支 付的房贷本金问题将越来越明显。”例 4： Sixty one percent of asset management CEOs say they plan to increase the headcount in 2016. As they set out to do so, only 47% have a strategy in place to promote divers

15、ity and inclusion.译文：61%的资产管理首席执行官表示他们计划增加2016年企业总人数。但当 他们开始着手此事时，只有47%的人已经准备好了提高员工多元性和包容性的战 略。分析：本句里的headcount的意思是人数或职员总数，必用the number of the employees简洁。还有“in place”也是非常地道的英文表达，意思是准备妥当。“They are going to run out of cash before everything is in place.”一切还未准备妥当, 他们的现金就会花光。”三、倍数的翻译英语里表达倍数的方式，一是“.time

16、s as .as ,二是.times +形容词比 较级+than”。需要注意的是这两种举行表达的意思是一模一样的，不要因为第二 种倍数表达形式有“形容词比拟级+than”就理解错误。比方：His compensation and benefits is four times as much as that of his subordinates和 “His compensation and benefits is four times more than that of his subordinates.”这两句 话翻译成中文都是“他的薪酬福利是下属的四倍。表示倍数的增加或减少，可以用“xti

17、mes+比拟急。也可以用表示增加或减 少的动词如increase/raise decrease/reduce等+by/to,要注意的是by表示增加或 减少的净数，不包括底数，常可省略；to表示增加或减少到什么程度，包括底数 在内。如：increase (by) three times增加了三倍=增加到原来的四倍；increase to three times增加到原来的三倍二增加了两倍。表示增加减少的动词还可以加“ x-fold ” 或“by a factor of x”，这两个结构都表示增加或减少的净数，不包括底数。另外还可以使用一类表示倍数的动词来表示，常见的有：“t。double”,“t

18、o triple”, “to quadrupleJto quintuple*。sextuple，“to septuple, to octuple”, to nonuple”,。decuple。“to double”可以译为“增加至之前两倍”或“增加了一倍”， 以此类推。“to double”还可以译为“翻一番”，“to quadruple”译为“翻两番”，“to octuple”译为“翻三番”。类似的，减少一半，也可以用动词“halve”。例 1： In January-May of 2015, the actually utilized FDI in eastern China increa

19、se to three times as much as that of the same period of the previous year.译文：2015年1至5月，中国东部实际利用外商直接投资与去年同期相比增加 至三倍。分析：actually utilized FDI 就是 actually utilized foreign direct investment, 就是实 际利用外资的意思。注意还有一个ODI,是overseas direct investment的缩写，是 海外直接投资的意思。例 2： A professional indicates that the average

20、 company sets a target of revenue growth at twice its industrys rate , and earnings four times higher .译文：一位从业人士表示一般公司会把年收入增长目标定在产业增长率的两倍， 收入定位在产业增长率的4倍。分析：本句里的twice its industry9s rate”是twice as much as its industrys rate”的省 略形式，表示是“产业增长率的两倍。而“four times higher”一定不能理解成字 面意思，它就是“four times asas ”的意思

21、。所以只能翻译成4倍，而不能翻译 为5倍。要说明的是汉语关于倍数减少的说法一直存在很大的争议，对于能否使用“减少 几倍”的说法，学界有着不同的看法。以前曾经一度认为这种说法是错误的，后 来又有不少学者为其正名，说其不仅来源于英文，更是来源于古代汉语。例 3： If an entrepreneur can increase sales at the high end of the brand while decreasing those at the low end of the brand by four times, both the companys revenues and profit

22、s will climb.译文：如果企业家能够增加高端产品的销售，并将低端产品销售减少了四分之三 /减少到原来的四分之一，公司的收入和利润都将提升。分析：本句需要注意的是high end和low end这两个词，它们指的是品牌的高 端产品和低端产品。汉语倍数的减少，可以翻译为“减少了四倍”，也可以翻译 为“减少了四分之三”或“减少到原来的四分之一:例 4： From 1970 to 2005, the volume of world merchandise trade expanded 27-fold, outstripping the expansion of world productio

23、n, which grew about 7.5 times in real terms.译文：1970年至2005年，全球商品贸易增加了 27倍，增幅超过全球生产增幅。全球生产增幅实际增长了 7.5倍。分析：商务英语里面的volume可以表示“量”，也可以表示“额”。Expand就是to increase, to grow 的意思。27-fold 中的 fold 表示倍。所以 to expand 27-fold 就 是增加了 27 倍的意思。Outstrip 就是 surpass, exceed,表示超过。in real terms 表示“实际的”。例 5： Moreover, the wor

24、ldwide business aircraft fleet is forecast to more than double to 30,900 aircraft in calendar year 2030, from 14,700 aircraft at the end of 2010.另外，全世界的商务飞机数量估计将在2010年14,700架的基础上翻一番，在2030 年度到达30,900架。分析：这里的double是个动词，直接翻译成“翻一番”或者“增加一倍、又或者“增 加至之前的两倍工彳列 6： A business with a 25 percent gross profit mar

25、gin that cuts its price by 10 percent would have to triple its sales volume just to break even.译文：如果一家总利润为25%的企业降价10%,其销售量必须为之前的三倍才 能收支平衡。_分析：to triple就是to increase by three times的意思，表示增长至之前的三倍。 To break even就是to make ends meet的意思，表示收支平衡。例 7： Over the past five years, our revenues from BRICS (Brazil

26、, Russia, India, China and South Africa) countries quadrupled from $533 million to $2.1 billion. 28、该央行不顾一切地做出了鲁莽决定，五年内减息一半。 分析：liquidity在商务与语境下常常翻译为“流动性”，这里指经济体系中货币投 放量的多少。四、与数词相关表达的翻译.总、总计、达、占的翻译英语里形容词“总的”的主要表达有total、all、aggregate gross ;动词“总计”的表达为 to total、to add up to to come to to sum up to “到达”的基本表达有 to come to、to amount toto register to arrive atto achieveto report at 表示“占（百分比）”的表达有 to take

30、1亿6千2百万美元。去年同期这两组数据分别为3千8百万 和2亿零8百万。分析：本句用了 amount to表示到达。注意net表示净，常用搭配有net amount（净 额）,net area（净面积），net asset（净资产），net profit（净利润），net income（净收入）。例 2： As stated in our Business Aircraft Market Forecast, published in June 2014 and available on Bombardier website at , we estimate 24,000 aircraft de

34、national total.译文：农、林、木、渔实际利用外资达6亿1千万美元，占全国的1.1%。分析：register不要望文生义的理解为“登记”。.增加、减少的翻译表示增力口的表达有：to increase to rise to be raised to be upto grow to hike to soar to skyrockets to climb to multiply表示减少的表达有：to decrease to be down to decline to drop to plunge to plummet可以搭配“up/down”来表示增加或减少的动词：to zoom to

35、scale to speed to step to go、to jump另外由于英语句子中不能同时使用两个谓语动词，单独使用副词up/down 作为补充结构的情况在英语中也非常常见，或者用“with+名词”的结构。在描述数据时还经常遇到“同比增加、减少”和“环比增加、减少”。“同比增 力口、减少”的基本句型是 “to increase/decrease by + 数字 + year on year/compared with the same period last year/higher than that of the previous year”； 表示环比增力口、 减少”的基本句型有t

38、lion.”是错误的，不是一个完整的 句子。不用be动词的情况只能是be down不做动词用的时候。比方，Our Free cash flow totaled $1.2 billion, down by 2%.彳列 3： The sales of culture, and sports and entertainments products of 5,000 major retail enterprises monitored by the Ministry of Commerce in May was up 13.7% and 8.9% respectively, 9.0 and 5.9 p
