3、ctionoftheSouthChinaSeaPlateintoanarc-continentcollisionaldeformationwithinMindoroIsland.ThecontinentalblockisrepresentedbynorthernPalawan,southernMindoro,RomblonIslandGroupandBuruangaPeninsulainPanayIsland,knowncollectivelyastheNorthPalawanBlock.Rocksuitesinthisblockincludeschiststhatarecharacteris

4、ticallyrichinquartzandchertformationsthathavebeendatedLatePermiantoJurassic.TherestofthearchipelagoisconsideredasthePhilippineMobileBelt.Approximatelyco-axialwiththemobilebeltisthePhilippineFault,amajorstrikeslipfaultthatapparentlydevelopedpartiallyinresponsetothekinematicforcesfromthesubductionfrom

5、theeastandwestofthemobilebelt.Manyareasofthismobilebeltareunderlainbyophioliticcomplexes.Usuallyoccurringtogetherwithpre-Cenozoicschistsandphyllites,theophioliticrocksrepresentbasementonwhichmagmaticarcshavedeveloped.TheagesoftheophioliticcomplexesrangefromJurassictoearlyPaleogene.Oneofthebeststudie

6、dcompleteophiolitesequenceistheZambalesOphiolitewheretectonizedperidotitesprogresstolayeredandisotropicgabbro,sheeteddikecomplex,pillowbasaltsandfinallypelagicsedimentaryrocks.OtherophioliticcomplexesincludethoseinIsabela,PolilloIsland,easternRizal,CamarinesNorte,CaramoanPeninsula,Mindoro,southernPa

7、lawan,PanayIsland,BoholIsland,LeyteIsland,SamarIsland,DinagatIslandGroup,north-centralZamboanga,MindanaoCentralCordilleraandPujadaPeninsula.Ultramaficrocksoftheseophiolitesarehoststosignificantdepositsofchromiteandnickel.Lateritesovertheserocksalsocontaineconomicdepositsofsecondarynickelminerals.Ont

8、heotherhand,massivesulphideandmanganesedepositsareassociatedwiththevolcanicandsedimentarycarapaceoftheophiolite.Ancientmagmaticarcsinthemobilebeltarecharacterizedbythickvolcanicflowsintercalatedwithpyroclasticandsedimentaryrocksandintrusionsofdiorite,quartzdioriteandandesitictodaciticrocks.Someintru

9、sions,however,haveamorealkaliccharactersuchasthesyenitesinIsabelaandmonzonitesinQuirinoandNuevaVizcaya.Theagesofthedioriteintrusionsvary,fromlateEarlyCretaceous(AlbianinCebutoLateMiocene-Pliocene(BlackMountainQuartzDioriteinBaguioDistrict.Youngervolcanicrocks,occurringasflows,intrusionsandvolcaniced

10、ificesdisposedinlinearbeltsareassociatedwithactivesubductionprocesses.ThesearebestexemplifiedbytheBataanvolcanicbeltandBicolvolcanicchain.SedimentarybasinslocatedbetweenarcsincludetheIlocos-CentralValleyBasin,CagayanValleyBasin,southeastLuzonBasin,VisayanSeaBasin,Agusan-DavaoBasinandCotabatoBasin.Go
