(Intermsoflifeexpectancy,clothing,food,housing,communication,education,job,entertainment,personalrelationship…)ObjectivesExpandyourvocabularyExpandyourknowledgeofEnglishgrammarUnderstandthestructureandthegeneralideaofthestoryUnderstandsciencefictionasaliterarygenreLearntoappreciateandcriticizeatextintheframeworkofthetimewhenitwaswrittenSolveyourownquestionsaboutthestoryWarmingupBackgroundAuthorStephenLeacock1869-1944borninEnglandin1869.emigratedtoCanadain1876withhisfamily.studiedmodernandclassicallanguagesandearnedhisbachelor’sdegreeintheUniversityofTorontoin1891.taughthighschoolbutdidnotquitelikethejob.startedgraduatestudiesattheuniversityofChicagoin1899.receivedadoctorateinpoliticalscienceandpoliticaleconomy,in1903andwentbacktoCanadatoteachattheMcGillUniversity.diedin1944inCanada.publishedover40books,morethanhalfofwhichwereonseriouspoliticalmattersbuthavemostlybeenforgotten.HeisoneofthefoundingparentsofCannadianlettersandliterature.Intheearly20thcentury,hisreputationasahumoristandapoliticaleconomistwasnotlimitedbytheboundariesofCanadabutspreadaroundtheworld.Hisreputationasahumoristhaswithstoodthetestoftime.The"StephenLeacockMedalforHumour"hasbeenawardedyearlysince1947tothebesthumorousbookbyaCanadianauthor.Thestoryinthetextwasoriginallyentitled“TheManinAsbestos—AnAllegoryoftheFuture”andwasfirstpublishedinacollectionofshortstoriesentitledNonsenseNovelsin1911.BackgroundLeacockwasasocialconservative.Heopposedgivingwomentherighttovote,dislikednon-Anglo-Saxonimmigrationandsupportedtheintroductionofsocialwelfarelegislation.Hewasastaunchchampion忠诚卫士oftheBritishEmpireandwentonlecturetourstofurtherthecause.AuthorStephenLeacockHouseinOrillia,OntarioStephenLeacock,whomightbecalledadystopian,hadseriousdoubtsabouthisopposites—theutopians,whotendedtopaintrosypicturesoftheworld’sfutureandbelievedthathumanwisdomwouldgiveushappysolutionstoallourproblems.Leacockdidnotsharethebeautifuldreamsoftheutopians.Hedidnotbelievemachines,industrialization,andscientificandtechnologicaldevelopmentscanautomaticallyleadustoaparadiseonEarth.LikeGeorgeOrwell’s1984andAnimalFarm,TheManinAshestospaintshumanity’sfutureindarklypessimisticcolors.

Utopiabelongstoonetypeofsocialtheory,itattemptstopresentseveraldesirablevaluesandpracticestoaso-calledidealcountryorsociety,whichmakesthesevaluesandpracticesthemselves.Generallyspeaking,theauthorofutopiadoesn’tbelievethesecountrieswillcometrue;atleasttheycouldnotturntorealityintheformoftheirperfectultimatesolution.Thereisonepointwhichcoulddistinguishtheidealfromutopia,thatis,noteveryidealcouldberealized.Yet,theutopianevercould.Thisconceptionjustexistsintheconsciousnessandcharacterofhumanbeings.Theutopiahastoremainperfectquality,whiletheidealdoesn’t.Severalofdevelopingcountriesandracesareembracinganideal—modernization,whichdoesn’tequalcivilianparadise.Thepeopleinpursuitofthisidealdon’tneedtoconsideritasanultimatesolution.Theidealisnotalwaysthecriticismandnegativeofreality,yettheutopiaemergesonthecontraryofthereality.Thusitcanbeseen,thereisagreatdifferencebetweenidealandutopia.Nevertheless,theyhaveaverycommonground,thatis,theinstinctofthehopesanddreamsofhumanbeings.Theidealisthegeneralformofinstinctandtheutopiahighest.乌托邦(Utopia)本意为“没有地方”或者“好地方”。延伸为还有理想,不可能完成好事情,其汉字翻译也能够了解为“乌”是没有,“托”是寄托,“邦”是国家,“乌托邦”三个字合起来意思即为“空想国家”。空想社会主义创始人托马斯·莫尔(英国人)在他名著《乌托邦》中虚构了一个航海家航行到一个奇乡异国“乌托邦”旅行见闻。在那里,财产是公有,人民是平等,实施着按需分配标准,大家穿统一工作服,在公共餐厅就餐,官吏由秘密投票产生。他认为,私有制是万恶之源,必须毁灭它。今天乌托邦往往有一个愈加广泛意义。它普通用来描写任何想象、理想社会。有时它也被用来描写今天社会试图将一些理论变成实现尝试。往往乌托邦也被用来表示一些好,不过无法实现(或几乎无法实现)提议、愿望、计划等。
