Bacon'sEssaysaretheworkofamanwho,inperceptatleast,hadadeepreverenceformoralprinciple.Noneotherthanoneentertainingsuchsentimentscouldhavesaidashehasdone:"Amanthathathnovirtueinhimselfeverenviethvirtueinothers";"Powertodogoodisthetrueandlawfulendofaspiring,foodthoughts(thoughGodacceptthem)yettowardsmenarelittlebetterthangooddreams,except

theybeputinact";and"Thedesireofpowerinexcesscausedtheanglestofall;thedesireofknowledgeinexcesscausedmantofall;butincharity(goodness)thereisnoexcess,neitherangelormancomeindangerbyit."

Thewriteroftheseessayswasalsoamanwhotheoreticallycherishedaprofoundloveandrespectforjustice:"Theprincipaldutyofajudgeistosuppressforceandfraud";"Letnomanweaklyconceivethatjustlawsandtruepolicyhaveanyantipathy,fortheyarelikethespiritsandsinews,thatonemoveswiththeother";and"Suspicionsamongstthoughtsarelikebatsamongstbirds;theyneverflybytwilight.Theydisposekingstotyranny,husbandstojealousy,wisementoirresolutionandmelancholy."

Bacon,moreover,alwaysmaintainsthesanctityoftruthalikeinscientificinvestigationandtheintercourseoflife:"Truthwhichonlydothjudgeitself,teacheththattheenquiryoftruthwhichisthelove-makingorwooingofit,theknowledgeoftruthwhichisthepresenceofit,andthebeliefoftruthwhichistheenjoyingofit,isthesovereigngoodofhumannature";orinmoralconduct:"Itisheavenuponearthtohaveaman'smindmoveincharity,restinprovidence,andturnuponthepolesoftruth."
