commonsense,however,isusuallynothingmorethananappealtothinkingthatjustfeels

right,butwhatfeelsrighttoonepersonmaynotfeelrighttoanother.Whetheritfeelsright

isusuallyareflectionoftheworldviewandideologieswehaveinternalised,andthat

frameshowweinteractwithnewideas.Whennewideasareinaccordwithwhatwe

alreadybelieve,theyaremorereadilyaccepted.Whentheyarenot,they,andthearguments

thatleadtothem,aremorereadilyrejected.

Weoftenmistakethisautomaticcompatibilitytestingofnewideaswithexistingbeliefs

asanapplicationofcommonsense,but,inreality,itismoreaboutjudgingthanthinking.

AsNobelistDanielKahnemannotesinThinking,FastandSlow,whenwearriveat

conclusionsinthisway,theoutcomesalsofeeltrue,regardlessofwhethertheyare.Weare

notpsychologicallywellequippedtojudgeourownthinking.

Wearealsohighlysusceptibletoarangeofcognitivebiasessuchasgivingpreference

tothefirstthingsthatcometomindwhenmakingdecisionsorgivingweighttoevidence.

Onewaywecancheckourinternalbiasesandinconsistenciesisthroughthesocial

verificationofknowledge,inwhichwetestourideasinarigorousandsystematicwayto

seeiftheymakesensenotjusttous,buttootherpeople.Theoutstandingexampleofthis

sociallysharedcognitionisscience.

Thatdoesnotmeanthatindividualsarenotcapableofexcellentthinking,nordoesit

meannoindividualisrational.Buttheextenttowhichindividualscandothisontheirown

isafxmctionofhowwellintegratedtheyarewithcommunitiesofsystematicinquiryinthe
