GeneralConductDuringanInterview
TypesofJobInterview
Ajobinterviewisaprocessinwhichapotentialemployeeisevaluatedbyanemployerfor
prospectiveemploymentinafirm.Aftertheinterview,theinterviewerwilldeterminewhetheran
applicantissuitablefortheposition.
Theremaybedifferentinterviewsduringajobsearch.It'simportantthatthecandidates
understandthepurposeofeach.Threeverycommontypesofinterviewsaretelephonescreening
interview,in-personscreeninginterviewandselectioninterview.
Othertypesofinterviewsarealsocoveredhere.Nomatterwhichtypeofinterview,the
candidates9goalistopresenttheirqualificationstothedecisionmakers(thepeoplewhomakethe
decisiontohireornot).Noteveryonethecandidatescomeintocontactwithwillbeadecision
maker.However,thecandidatesshouldtreateachpersonasthoughtheyhavetheauthoritytohire
them(fromtheparkingattendant,tothesecretary,totheCEO).
1.TelephoneScreeningInterview.Thisinterviewsavestheemployertimebyeliminating
candidatesbasedonessentialcriteriasuchasparticularjobrequirements,educationorrequired
skills.Sincetheseinterviewswilloftenoccurunexpectedly,it'simportantthatthecandidates*job
searchrecordsareorganisedandkeptwheretheycanbereachedatamoment'snotice.Therefore
itisagoodideatohaveaparticularplaceinyourhomeforyourdocuments.Keepyourresumein
viewandrefertoitasneeded.
2.In-personScreeningInterview.Thisinterviewisusedtoverifythecandidate's
qualificationsforthepositionandtoestablishapreliminaryimpressionofthecandidate'sattitude,
interestandprofessionalstyle.Aprofessionalscreenerfromtheemployer'sHumanResources
Departmentusuallyconductstheinterview.Atthisstage,thegoalistoselectthemostsuitable
candidateswhowillmeetthedecisionmakers.
3・SelectionInterview.Conductedbythedecisionmaker,thepuiposeofthisinterviewisto
probethecandidate'squalificationsandtoassessthecomfortlevelwithwhichthecandidate
mightestablishworkingrelationships.Theremaybemorethanoneinterviewatthisstage.Asthe
numberofcandidatesiswhittleddown,acandidatemaybeinvitedbacktospeakwiththesame
personand/orwithothermanagersormembersoftheworkgroup.Thecandidate'sabilityto
establishrapportandpresentyourselfastherightpersonforthepositioniscritical.
Evenifthereisonlyonedecisionmaker,theopinionsoftheotherswillbesoughtandwill
probablyhaveaneffectontheoutcome.Whenyou'reinvitedtointerviewwithanumberof
people,it'simportantthatyoupresentyourselfeffectivelytoeachoneofthem.Remember,they
willbeevaluatingyourskillsandabilitytofitin.Asalways,beyourself,butselltoeachperson's
individualconcerns.
4.WorkSampleInterview.Thisinterviewisdonetoallowtheapplicantanopportunityto
“showtheirwares”.Itcouldbeatimeforagraphicartisttodisplayhis/herportfolio.A
salespersonmaybeaskedtomakeasalespresentation.Anofficeworkermaybeaskedto
completeabusinessletterusingaspecifictypeofcomputersoftwareprogram.
5.PeerGroupInterview.Thisinterviewisanopportunitytomeetandtalkwithprospective
coworkers.Justasinotherinterviews,thepeergroupwillbeevaluatingthecandidate,
determininghowhewouldfitin.
6.GroupInterview.Sometimesreferredtoasapanelinterview,itusuallyconsistsofthree
ormorepeople,allaskingquestions.Directyouranswertotheindividualaskingthequestion,but
trytomaintainsomeeyecontactwiththeothermembersofthegroup.Don'tforgettosmile.It
showsconfidence.
7.LuncheonInterview."TheMeal“一Thistypeofinterviewassesseshowwellacandidate
canhandlehimselfinasocialsituation.EmployerrepresentativesmayincludetheRecruitment
Manager,apersonfromtheHumanResourcesDepartmentandoneormorepeergroupemployees.

Theinterrogatorasksanumberofoffensivequestionsthataredesignedtodeliberatelycause
discomfort.Keepcool,taketimeinrespondingtothequestions,andwhenit'sallover,reward

9.VideoconferenceInterview.Someemployerstodayusevideoconferencestoconduct
meetingsorcarryoutotheraspectsoftheirbusiness.Conductinganinterviewviavideoconference
enablesanemployertosavetravelcostsandstillhave,ineffect,aperson-to-personinterview.If
thethoughtoffacingacameraduringaninterviewfrightensyou,practisebeforeavideocamera
