Accordingtoa2003ChinaOnlineSecurityResearchReportreleasedbyiResearch,aChineseInternetresearchcentre,nearly87percentofthedomesticcomputerswereinfectedwithsomekindofvirus<病毒>lastyear.Andaboutoneinfourrespondentshavesaidthattheircomputerswereattackedatleasteverythreemonths.

Someexpertshaveestimatedthattheworldwidecostofthevirusattacksin2003,includingclean-upandlostproductivity,amountedtoatleastUS$82billion.

InlateJanuary,theUSDepartmentofHomelandSecuritylauncheditsNationalCyberAlertSystemtofighttheproblem.Expertsandnon-expertscansignupwiththesystemforemailalertsaboutthelatestcomputerthreats.

Inaday,thesitehadreceivedmorethanonemillionhits,accordingtoofficials,andinlessthanaweekithad250,000subscribers.

Lastweek,MicrosoftreleasedacompactdiscfilledwiththelatestsecurityupgradesithascomeupwithsinceOctobertodefendagainstviruses.

Althoughthisisaglobalwar,-onethatseemsnoeasiertofightthantheoneagainstbirdflu-computerhackingisdismissedbyoneexpertasprimarilytheworksofhormone-crazed<荷尔蒙分泌旺盛的>teenagedboys.
