"PrisonBreak"Review

Eventhoughthe2022-2022TVseasondoesn’tofficiallystartuntilSeptember19(thedayaftertheEmmyAwards),onenetworkhasdecidedtostarttheirseasonearly.ThatsaidnetworkwouldbeFOX,andtheirfirstshowistheprisondrama“PrisonBreak.”Despitehavingaslightlyunbelievableconcept,itisagreatwaytostarttheseasonoffonagoodfoot.

MichaelScofield(WentworthMiller)isadesperateman.Hisbrother,LincolnBurrows(DominicPurcell),adeathrowinmateconfinedtoFoxRiverStatePenitentiaryinJoliet,Illinois,isscheduledtodieinalittleoveramonthforthemurderoftheVicePresident’sbrother,TerrenceSteadman(DavidLively.)MichaelhasanelaborateplantobreakLincolnoutofjail,andintheopeningsceneofthepilot,heisseenhavingthelastofaseriesoftattoosappliedtohisbody.ThosetattoosaretheblueprintsforFoxRiver.In1999,hewasinvolvedinaretrofittingjoboftheprison,andhestillhasalloftheplansofthebuildingwithhim.Afterdoingalltheextensiveresearch,andaddingthosenotestohistattoos,hegetsridofalloftheevidence.

Thenextday,hegoesintothedowntownChicagobranchofUnitedSavingsBankandattemptstostealoverahalfmilliondollars.Whenheisarrested,heisputontrialforarmedrobbery.Hepleadsnocontesttothejudge(CherylLynnBruce),despitetheobjectionsofhislawyerandchildhoodfriendVeronicaDonovan(RobinTunney.)Thejudgesentenceshimtofiveyears,withparoleintwoandahalf.MichaelhasrequestedtobesenttoFoxRiver,whichthejudgegrants.Veronicastilldoesn’tunderstandwhyMichaelisdoingthis,becauseheisn’tviolentandhedoesn’tneedthemoney.Also,hewastheonlypositiveinfluenceforLJ(MarshallAllman),Lincoln’sson.LJliveswithhismother,LisaRix(JessalynGilsig),andherhusbandAdrian(PhilipRayburnSmith.)Hehasbeengettingintotroublelately,havingbeenbustedforpossessionofmarijuana,andLisadoesn’tknowwhattodoaboutit.

WhenMichaelgetstoFoxRiver,CaptainBradBellick(WadeWilliams)greetshim,andtellshimthathehasnothingcomingtohim.Michaelmeetshisnewcellmate,FernandoSucre(AmauryNolasco.)Sucreisengagedtohisgirlfriend,MaricruzDelgado(CamilleGuaty),thoughafriendofhersnamedHector(KurtCaceres)hasbeenmakingaplayforher.Hejustwantstodohistimeandgetoutsothathecangetmarried.

Meanwhile,Veronicaisstilltroubledbythecase.SheisengagedtoaninvestmentbankernamedSebastianBalfour(AnthonyStarke),thoughitappearsthatshestillthinksaboutLincoln,whousedtobeherboyfriend.

BackatFoxRiver,SucretellsMichaelaboutCharlesWestmoreland(MuseWatson),whomeveryonewhispersisactuallytheinfamous.Cooper,whoparachutedoutofaplanethirtyyearsagowithamillionandahalfincash(heactuallyonlygotawaywith$200,000.)CharleshasacatnamedMarilynwhowasgrandfatheredinbeforeFoxRiverprohibitedpetownership.

MichaeltellsSucrethatLincoln,orastheotherinmatescallhim,“LinctheSink”(becausehe’llcomeatyouwitheverythingbutthekitchensink),ishisbrother.HewantstoknowhowtogettoLincoln.Sucretellshimthattheonlywaytodothatisthrough“.,”orPrisonIndustries(meaningtheinmateswhobehavegettodoworkfortheprison.)FormermobbossJohnAbruzzi(PeterStormare)runs.,andheistheonlyonewhocangetMichaelapprovedforit.MichaellaterasksAbruzziifhecanbehiredfor.,givinghimapaperorigamiswanandtellinghimthathehassomethingtoofferthemobboss.Abruzziscoffsatthisnew“fish”andthrowsawaytheswan.MichaeldoeshavesomethingtoofferAbruzzithough.FibonacciisamobinformantwhosetestimonyputAbruzzibehindbars,andhe,alongwithmobstersGavinSmallhouse(GianniRusso),PhillyFalzone(AlSapienza),andMaggio(RichKomenich),areveryinterestedinfindingtheman,whoiscurrentlyinwitnessprotection.Histestimonycouldlandalloftheminjail,andFalzonespecificallythreatensAbruzziwithharmtohiskidsifhedoesn’tfindFibonacci.

MichaelvisitsDr.SaraTancredi(SarahWayneCallies),theprisondoctor.SaraisthedaughterofIllinoisGovernor“FrontierJustice”FrankTancredi,afactthatshedoesn’tliketotellmanypeopleabout,becauseshedifferswithherfatherintheirpoliticalbeliefs.Michaelhastogotheinfirmaryforhisregularinsulinshots,becausehehasTypeIDiabetes.

InWashingtonD.C.,SpecialAgentPaulKellerman(PaulAdelstein)andSpecialAgentDannyHale(DannyMcCarthy)aretryingtothwarttheeffortsofanyonewhomightfreeLincoln.AmannamedBishopMcMorrow(ChelcieRoss)hasalotofinfluencewiththeGovernorandmaypersuadehimtograntastayofexecution.Theydecidetovisithimand“persuade”himtobackoffbyaccusinghimoftaxfraud.McMorrowwon’tbebullied,butlaterintheepisode,heisshotandkilledinhisbed.

BackatFoxRiver,WardenHenryPope(StacyKeach)askstoseeMichael.HeknowsthatMichaelisastructuralengineer,soheoffershimthreedaysofworkaweekinPope’sofficehelpinghimbuildamodeloftheTajMahalmadeoutoftoothpicks.Itisforhiswifefortheirfortiethweddinganniversary,buthecan’tseemtogettheproperreinforcementstokeepitfromcollapsing,andthatiswhereMichaelcomesin.Michaelturnsdowntheofferatfirst,butafewdayslater,heacceptstheofferwhenthewardenthreatenstothrowMichaelintheSHU(solitaryconfinement)forninetydaysforfighting.ThereasonhewasfightingwasthatAbruzzigotacallfromMaggiothattheyreceivedapictureofFibonacciandafoldedupswan.HerealizesthatMichaeldoeshaveinformationaboutFibonacci,andhedemandsthatthefishtellhimwheretheinformantis.MichaelwilltellAbruzzitheinformation,butnotuntiltheyarebothsafeoutsidethewallsoftheprison.Abruzzitakesoffensetothis,andhehashisgoonsbeatMichaelup(helaterendsupsupplyingMichaelwithhis.workcardthough.)

Michaelgoesbacktofinishunscrewingthebolt,butT-BagandMayTagcatchhimagain.T-BagmakesMichaelhandoverthebolt,whogivesittoMayTag.MichaellatergoestoAbruzzitoaskhimaboutshakingdownaninmate,whichhetellshimhewilldo,assoonasMichaeltellshimwheretofindFibonacci.MichaelfurtherfrustratesAbruzzibytellinghimthathewilldothatoncetheyescape.

VeronicafindsCrab’sresidenceandrunsintoCrab’smother,whotellsherthatCrabisdead.Backinheroffice,VeronicagetsacallfromLeticiaBarris(AdinaPorter),CrabSimmons’ex-girlfriend.ShemeetswithLeticia,whotellsherthatshebelievesthatthesamepeoplewhokilledCrabaretryingtokillLincoln.VeronicathoughtthatCrabhad.’d,butLeticiasaidthatCrabhadabadheartandwouldnevertouchdrugs.HeconvenientlydiedaweekafterLincolnhadkilledSteadman.

HaleandKellermanhadalreadyquestionedTimabouthisvisittoVeronica,andnowtheyhavewitnessedhermeetingwithLeticia.Kellermancallsamysteriouswoman,whoinstructshimto“dowhatyouneedtodotomakethisgoaway.”

Duringaprisonriot,anotherinmatefatallystabsMayTag,butMichaelisabletogettheboltawayfromhim.T-BagassumesthatMichaelhaddonethestabbing,andhevowsrevenge.MichaelsharpensthepointofthebolttobecomeanAllenwrench,whichistheperfectsizetofitintoaboltunderneathatoilet(welaterseeinthecomingattractionsthatbehindthetoiletisatunnel,whichIassumeistheescaperoute.)

ThedirectoroftheRushHourmovies,BrettRatner,executiveproducesanddirectedthefirsthourofthisshow.PaulScheuring,thewriterofthe2022VinDieselmovieAManApart,createdthisseriesandwroteitsfirsttwoepisodes.Theyhaveconstructedashowthatisalittlebitfar-fetched,butinteresting.ThefactthatMichaelconvenientlygoestothesameprisonasLincoln,andthatSaraisonlymildlyinq
