Butwhatarethereasonsforthis,andisthepicturereallysog1oomy?Theanswertothe

firstquestionisreallyquitesimple:marriageisnolongerthenecessityitoncewas.The

institutionofmarriagehasbeenbasedforyearspartlyoneconomicneed.Womenusedtobe

economicallydependentontheirhusbandsastheyusuallydidn,thavejobsoutsidethehome.But

withtherisingnumberofwomeninwell-payingjobs,thisisnolongerthecase,sotheydon't

feelthattheyneedtostayinafailingmarriage.

Inanswertothesecondquestion,theoutlookmaynotbeaspessimisticasitseems.While

therateofdivorcehasrisen,therateofcouplesmarryinghasneveractuallyfallenverymuch,

somarriageisstillquitepopular.Inadditiontothis,manycouplesnowcohabitanddon1tbother

tomarry.Thesecouplesareeffectivelymarried,buttheydonotappearineitherthemarriage

ordivorcestatistics.Infact,morethan50%offirstmarriagessurvive.Thestatisticsare

deceptivebecausethereisahighernumberofdivorcesinsecondandthirdmarriagesthaninfirst

marriages.

Soismarriagereallyanoutdatedinstitution?Thefactthatmostpeoplestillgetmarried

indicatesthatitisn,t.Anditisalsotruethatmarriedcoupleshaveahealthierlifethansingle

people:theysufferlessfromstressanditsconsequences,suchasheartproblems,andmarried

replacingoneoftheexistingdevices.

Otherresearchhasindicatedthatthismultitaskingisevenaffectingthewayfamilies

themselvesfunctionasyoungpeoplearetoowrappedup3intheirownisolatedworldstointeract

withtheotherpeoplearoundthem.Theycannolongergreetfamilymemberswhentheyenterthe

housenorcantheyeatatthefamilytable.

Al1thiselectronicwizardryissupposedlyalsoseriouslyaffectingyoungpeople*s

performanceatuniversityandintheworkplace.Whenaskedabouttheirperceptionoftheimpact

ofmoderngadgetsontheirperformanceoftasks,theoverwhelmingmajorityofyoungpeoplegave

afavourableresponse.

Theresponsefromtheacademicandbusinessworldswasnotquiteaspositive.Theformerfeel

thatmultitaskingwithelectronicgadgetsbychiIdrenaffects1aterdevelopmentofstudyskills,

resultinginadeclineinthequalityofwriting,forexample,becauseofthelackofconcentration

ontaskcompletion.Theyfeelthatmanyundergraduatesnowurgentlyneedremedialhelpwithstudy

skills.Similarly,employersfeelthatyoungpeopleenteringtheworkforceneedtobetaughtall

overagain,astheyhavebecomedeskilled.

Whileallthismaybetrue,itmustbeborneinmind4thatmoreandmoreisexpectedofyoung

peoplenowadays;infact,toomuch.Praiseratherthancriticismisdueinrespectof5theway

today'syouthareabletocopedespitewhattheoldergenerationthrowatthem.
