VincentvanGoghpaintedTheStarryNight,oiloncanvas(油画布),amoderatelyabstractlandscapepaintingofanightskyoverasmallhillsidevillage,duringhis12-monthstayatthementalhospitalinSaint-Remy-de-Provence,Francebetween1889and1890.WhentheMuseumofModernArtinNewYorkCitypurchasedthepaintingfromaprivatecollectorin1941,itwasnotwellknown,butithassincebecomeoneofVincentvanGogh'smostfamousworks.
