BlackAmericansweretreatedassecondclasscitizens,especiallyintheSouth.Dissatisfactionwith
unfairtreatmenteventuallyledtothecivilrightsprotestsofthe1950sand1960sthatbroughtabout
governmentactionaimedatreducingdiscrimination.
Asaresult,AfricanAmericanshavecomealongwayinthelastfiftyyears,buttheystillfind
themselvesatadisadvantageincomparisonwithAmericansofEuropeandescent.Only17percent
oftheblackpopulationareabletofinishhighereducation,incontrastto28percentofwhites.
Incomesfortheaveragewhitefamilywerejustover$44,000in1999.Foranaverageblackfamily,
however,thefigurewasintheregionof$25,000.Notoneofthechiefexecutiveofficersofthetop
500companiesisblack.
