HowtoPrintonSilkPaintingonsilkisafunandsimpleprojectthatanyonecanundertake.Youonlyneedafewmaterialsandacreativemind!Thereareafewdifferenttechniquesforpaintingsilk,includingtheSertimethodandthealcoholandsaltmethod.TheSertimethodcreatesmoredistinctlines,whilethealcoholandsaltmethodresultsinsofterlinesandmoretexturedpieces.1Selectpaintsdesignedspecificallyforsilk.

Stretchyoursilkonaframe.Youcanpurchaseormakestretcherbarstoholdthesilkinplace.Makesurethefabricisevenlystretched,andisneithertootightnortooloose.Ifit'stooloose,itwillsagandthepaintwillpuddle,butifit'stootight,itmaydamagethefabric.

Drawyourdesignonthesilk.Sketchthepatternordesigninpencilonapieceofpaperfirst.Tracethedesigninblackmarker,allowittodry,thenputthepaperunderneaththesilk.Useapenciloravanishingmarkertotransferthedesignontothesilk.Youcancreateabstractdesigns,drawflowersorvines,makeageometricprint,orevenwritelettersorwords.

2Outlinethedesignwithresistorgutta.Resistandguttaareusedtocreatecleanlinesorbordersinthepaint,andarethenremovedafterpainting.Guttaisachemicalsolventthatmustberemovedbyadrycleaner.Resistisawater-basedproductthatcanberinsedoutofthefabricwithwater.Fillabottlewithasmalltipapplicatorwithresistorgutta,andholdthebottlevertically,touchingthetiptothesilk.Carefullytracetheoutlinewithasteadyhand,applyingevenpressure.Makesuretherearenogapsorbreaksinthelines,orthepaintwillspreadoutsidethedesign.3

Allowtheresistorguttatodryfully.Guttadriesquickly,whileresisttakeslonger.Tospeeduptheprocess,aimablowdryer,setatmediumheat,atthelines.Keepthedryerafewinchesfromthefabrictoavoidscorchingitorsmearingtheresist.

4Useamedium-sizedpaintbrushtoapplypainttotheitemyou'repainting.Dipamedium-sizedpaintbrushintothepaintcolorofyourchoiceandlightlybrushitonthesilk.Takecarenottogetthepaintorpaintbrushtooclosetotheresistorgutta,oritmaybegintodissolve.Don'tworry,though,thepaintwillnaturallyspreadtothelines.Workquicklyonlargebackgroundareassothatthepaintgetsabsorbedevenly.[7]Ifyounoticeagapinyourresist/guttalinewhilepainting,eitherstopthepaintfromspreadingbyaimingablowdryeratit,orfillinthegapwithresist/guttaandallowittodrybeforecontinuing.

5Setthepaintwithanironafter24hours.Once24hourshavepassedandthepaintandresist/guttaaredry,removetheitemyou'repaintingfromtheframe.Pluginyourironandheatittothesilksetting.Layyouritemfacedownonacoveredironingboard.Placeanironingclothinbetweenitandtheiron.Usecircularmotionstoironsmallareasfor2-3minuteseachtoensurethatthepaint,aswellastheresistorgutta,iscompletelyset.

Washtheitemifyouusedresist,ordrycleanitifyouusedgutta.Inordertoremovetheresistorgutta,theitemmustbecleaned.Becauseresistiswater-based,youcanrinsetheiteminwarmwatertoremoveit.Then,hangittodryandironitonthesilksettingwhilestilldamp.Guttarequiresremovalbyadrycleaner.

1Spraythesilkwithadilutedmixofwaterandrubbingalcohol.Usetwopartsalcoholtoonepartdistilledwater.Thealcoholprovidesmoretimetopaintasitslowsdownthedryingtime,whilealsoallowingthedyetospreadanddrywithasoft,fuzzyedge.

2Applythefirstlayerofpaintwhilethesilkisstillwet.Tocreatedesignsorpatternsonthesilk,applyevenstrokesusingapaintbrushdippedinthepaintcolorofyourchoice.Thesizeofthepaintbrushyouchoosewillcorrespondtohowthickorthinthelinesordesignsare.

3Addadarkercolornexttoadddimension.Whilethesilkisstillwet,applyyoursecondcolor.Ingeneral,alwaysstartwithlightshadesthenmoveontodarkercolors(suchasadarkershadeofyourprimarycolor).Sincethecolorswillbetransparent,onceyougodark,it'shardtogobacktolight.4

Allowtheitemtodryforafewhours.Youmaynoticesomeofthecolorsseparatingorspreading,whichistypical,andcancreatebeautifulblendedpatterns.5Buildyourlinesoradddesignswithadarkcolor.Youcanchooseanevendarkershadeofyourprimarycolororanothercolortopaintonthedrysilknext.Theselineswilldrywithahardedgeandmayalsohaveadarkoutlinearoundthem.6

Createeffectswithalcoholorsalt.Tosoftenharshlines,spraythesilkwiththedilutedalcoholmixture.Toaddamottledtexture,sprinkleanykindofsaltonthesilk.Saltisadryingagentwhichdrawsthepainttowardit,creatinganeateffect.7
