militaryinstallations.Enterthescientists.The1957-1958InternationalGeophysicalYear

broughttogetherscientistsfromcompetingcountriestostudyAntarctica,andcountries

temporarilysuspendedtheirterritorialdisputes(争议).In1959,12countriessignedthe

AntarcticTreatytopreservethecontinentforpeacefulscientificdiscoveryratherthanterritorial

andmilitarygain.

Sixtyyearslater,wemustnowsavetheArctic.AnewMarineArcticPeaceSanctuary

(MAPS)TreatywouldprotecttheArcticOceanasascientificpreserveforpeacefulpurposes

only.SimilartoAntarctica,MAPSwouldprohibitresourceexploitation,commercialfishingand
