EVvalue-chainanalysisframework.AkeydebateamonginvestorsiswhethertheEVindustrywillliveuptothehighhopesofveryattractivegrowthandreturnsthatmustsurelyresultfromreplacingtheentireplanet'sinstalledbaseofconventionalICE(internalcombustionengine)automobiles.Asisoftenthecase,thingshavenotquiteliveduptoexpectations,andinvestorswehavespokentohavebeenaskinghowbesttounderstandtheunderlyingdynamicsoftheEVindustry,rangingfromthemixedfinancialperformanceatmostAsianEVplayerstothecompetitivechangesatbatterymakers.Tohelpinvestorsre-evaluatethedynamicsofEVvaluechains,wehavecollectivelytakenwhatwebelievetobeaproprietaryin-depthlookacrossthefullspectrumfromtheUpstream(producersofmaterialsandbatteries)totheDownstream(EVOEMsandcharginginfrastructureplayers)toascertaininwhichpartsofthevaluechainthemoneyisbeingmade,andhowthisisdistributedregionally.Thistheninformsourstockrecommendations.

Whatwelearned.WeconcludethattheUpstreambatterysegmentiswherethemoneyisbeingspent(massivecapex)butreturnsarelow,duetocommoditizationandlikelyoversupplyinthecoming2-3years,andthattheDownstreamiswherethemoney(return)isbeingmade–theDownstreamnamesaregeneratingthehighestROIC,cashconversionandROE.WeexaminethisdivergenceofreturnsintheEVvaluechainanditsimplicationsforselectingstocks,below.Basedonourconversationswithinvestors,webelievemanyinthemarketarenotfullycognizantthatthereisafurtherlevelofdivergence,whichouranalysisoftheEVvaluechainbringstothesurface:namelythatbatteryispredominantinthelow-returnUpstreamsegmentthatcompetesglobally,whileDownstream-basedplayers,mainlyinChina,haveentrenchedpositionsintheDownstream.WiththeUpstreamplayersfacingawaveofnewentrantsgloballyanddisruptivetechnologies(cannibalizationrisks),weexpectmoreofthemtomovedownstreaminsearchofreturns,andenteringthissegmentismoreattractivefollowingconsolidationandintermsofrisk-reward.
