Thedeal-makingactivitywasalsodrivenbytheriseofSpecialPurposeAcquisitionCompanies(SPACs),whichledfiveacquisitionsinthequarter:eToro($9.6bn),Hippo($1.2bn),Metromile($956m),Bakkt($2.1bn),andSoFi($8.7bn).WebelievethatSPACs’interestinfintechwillcontinue,especiallyinverticalsthatbenefitfrom:1)agrowingcashlesssocietyandwhatthismeansforinternationalmoneyflows;2)openbanking;3)imbeddedfinance–trading,wealthmanagement,saving,credit,andlending;and4)crypto.

Giventherobustgrowthalotoffintechcompaniesareexperiencingandthepremiuminvestorsareplacingonthisgrowth–whichisperceivedtobesecular–weexpectdemandfordealstocontinuewellintothesecondhalfofthisyear.
WealsonotethatwhileSPACshavemainlybeenanAmericanphenomenon,webelievethatEuropeisnowstartingtocatchupgiventhesizeofprivatelyfundedtechbusinessesthatcouldbeidealtargets.WebelieveEuropeanfintechswillstarttogarnermoreattentionfromSPACs,especiallyasEuropeanSPACsstarttocometomarket.
JustthreeSPACslistedinEuropelastyear,netting$495m.Sofarthisyear,Lakestarraised€275minFebruary,468Capitalislookingtoraise€300m,andEuropeanFintechIPOCompanyBV(afintech-focusedSPAC)raised€415mwhenitfloatedinAmsterdam.
