Manyyearsbefore,whenIwasakid,Momoftensentmeacrossthestreetwithaplateof

supperforanelderlyneighbor.Igrewupwatchinghernotonlysharedelicioushomemadesuppers

withthesethankfulneighbors,butalsotakethetimetositandvisitwiththem—deliveringnot

justfoodbutfriendship.

AsIgotolder,Ijoinedherasshevisitedelderlyfriendsandfamily,evenstrangers——visits

thatwerefilledwithlaughterandfunstories.Momwastednotimewhileshewasthere一

sweepingthekitchenfloor,checkingthefridgeforoldfood,washinganydishesleftinthesink,

andplacingawarm,homemadeapplecakeonthecountertoptobeenjoyedlater.Sheheldhands

andlistenedcloselytostories,anditwasasifanartistwererepaintingtheportraitsaroundus一

addinganewsparkletounhappyeyes,andsmilestosorrowfulfaces.

Momlaughedonedayasshetoldmethatsomeoneintownhadstartedcallinghervanthe

“widowwagonyInthesmalltownwheresheandDadlived,allthefolkstraveledseventy-five

milestothenexttowntoseethedoctorandshopforgroceries.Momregularlychauffcuredolder

ladiesfordaysfilledwithmiscellaneouserrands,appointments,andlunchattheGoldenCorral.

Thespaceinthe“widowwagon“wasfilledwithlaughterandchatter,alongwithbagsof

groceriesandfilledprescriptions,asthisbandofwomencompletedtheirjourneybeforeMom

depositedthemattheirhomes.

Ofcourse,Momgavemegreatcarealongthewayaswell.WhenthedoctortoldmethatI

wouldhavetostayinbedforthelasttwomonthsofmythirdpregnancy,Mommovedinwithus

—cooking,cleaning,doingthelaundry,andcaringforourtwolittleboys.Ivividlyrememberher

walkingintomybedroomwithaplateoffreshlycutpineapple,strawberries,blackberriesand

greenapplesontopofaservingofcottagecheeseandaglassoficedwater.Ifeltsoloved.We

didn'taskMomtocome;shedidn'taskhowshecouldhelp;sheknewwhattodoandsimply

showedup-likeMaryPoppinslandingontheporch,bagandumbrellaintow.

Momtaughtmealotaboutmakingtimeforothers—notwithwordsnecessarily,butwithher

actions.Shewastheverybestatseeinganeedandtakingcareofit——notjustofferingtohelp,

butshowingup.

So,Ishouldn'thavebeensuiprisedthatdayassheletgoofmyhandwhenwewalkedin.She
