Tointroducestudentstotheconceptsofphasenucleationandgraingrowth,andtounderstandthemechanismsofgrainsizeandgrainshapecontrolsduring
solidification.Tointroducecommoncrystaldefectsandunderstandtheirrolesinmaterialsbehaviors.
Tointroducethemechanismsandinfluentialfactorsofatomicdiffusion.BeabletosolvesimplediffusionproblemsbyusingFick’sLaws.
Toteachtheknowledgeofbinaryphase-diagramysis.Beabletoidentifythephases,eutectics,eutectoid,andperitecticreactionsinphasediagrams,aswellascalculatethephase(ormicroconstituent)fractionsbyusingtheLeverRule.
Giveanintroductiontotherelationshipbetweenstructureandmechanicalproperties,withaparticularfocusonhowdislocationsaffectsticdeformationofmetalsandwhatmechanismsareemployedformetalalloystrengthening.

Togetacquaintedwiththetypicalapplicationsandprocessingofceramicsandglasses,especiallyfortheadvancedceramics.
Befamiliarwithdifferenttypesofsticsand,foreach,citetypicaluses.Gainageneralunderstandingofpolymerprocessing.
Tointroducemaincharacteristicsofcompositematerialswithregardtothetypesofreinmentsandmatrices.Gainageneralunderstandingofpropertyaveragingincomposites
