Just9%ofglobalplasticwasteisrecycled.Plasticstrawsarebynomeansthe
biggestsource(来源plasticpollution,butthey'verecentlycomeunderfire
becausemostpeopledon'tneedthemtodrinkwithand,becauseoftheirsmall
sizeandweight,theycannotberecycled.Everystrawthat'spartofVonWong's

testsofcreativethinking.Theywererandomlydividedintofourgroupsandexposed
tovariousnoiselevelsinthebackground,fromtotalsilenceto50decibels(分贝),70
decibels,and85decibels.Thedifferencesbetweenmostofthegroupswere
statisticallyinsignificant;however,theparticipantsinthe70decibelsgroup-those
exposedtoalevelofnoisesimilartobackgroundcheaterinacoffee
shop-significantlyoutperformedtheothergroups.Sincetheeffectsweresmall,this
maysuggestthatourcreativethinkingdoesnotdifferthatmuchinresponsetototal
silenceand85decibelsofbackgroundnoise.
