1.Introduction
Thehighschoolsenioryearisacrucialperiodforstudents’academiccareers.Entrustedwiththeresponsibilityofpreparingforcollegeadmission,studentslooktoexcelintheirstudiesinordertosecureaplaceinaprestigiousuniversity.Assuch,theEnglishlanguage,beingasignificantsubjectinthesecondaryeducationcurriculum,oftenposesachallengeforstudentsintheirfinalyear.
2.ThesignificanceofEnglishlanguageproficiency
Intoday’sworld,Englishlanguageproficiencyhasbecomeanecessity.Itisauniversallanguagethatopensupdoorstoaplethoraofopportunitiesforanindividual.Agoodcommandofthislanguagewouldmeanthatapersoncanconnectwithothersfromallovertheworld,beitinapersonalorprofessionalcapacity.Therefore,itisimperativeforhighschoolstudentstohaveanexcellentgraspofEnglish.
AdmissionintoauniversityrequiresastudenttoshowproficiencyinEnglishlanguageskills.MostuniversitiesrequirestudentstotaketheTOEFL(TestofEnglishasaForeignLanguage)orIELTS(InternationalEnglishLanguageTestingSystem)standardizedexams,andachievingagoodscoreinthesetestsisessential.Englishlanguageproficiencyisalsoimportantforthoseseekingemploymentopportunitiesincompaniesthatrequireinternationalcommunication.
3.Challengesfacedbyhighschoolseniors
Thefinalyearofhighschoolisachallengingtimeforstudentsacrosstheworld,andstudentsstudyingEnglishasasecondlanguage(ESL)oftenfaceadditionalobstacles.ESLstudentsfacechallengesinreading,writing,listening,andspeakinginEnglish,andthiscannegativelyaffecttheirscoresinexams.TheirdifficultiesareprimarilyduetothefactthattheyarenotexposedtoEnglishoutsideoftheclassroom,andthereforethelanguageisn’tusedandpracticednaturally.
Furthermore,theproficiencylevelofthestudentsmaydiffer,withsomehavingagoodcommandofthelanguagewhileothersstruggletounderstandbasicconcepts.ItisimportantforteacherstotakeintoaccountthedifferentlevelsofEnglishproficiencyandcreateindividualizedlessonplanswithanemphasisontheareasthatrequiremoreattention.
4.StrategiestoimproveEnglishlanguageskills
It’snotimpossibletoimproveone’sEnglishlanguageskills,followingtherightstrategiescanmakeallthedifference.HerearesomeeffectivewaystoimproveyourcommandovertheEnglishlanguage:
1.ReadEnglishbooks,articles,andothermaterials
Readingisanimportantactivitythatcanhelpstudentsimprovetheirvocabularyandgrammar.Youcanbeginwithsimpletextslikechildren’sbooksandgraduallymoveontomorecomplexoneslikenovels,newspapers,andresearcharticles.Thisapproachwillexposeyoutodifferentwritingstyles,arangeofvocabulary,anddifferentlanguagestructuresthatcanimproveyourcomprehensionandspeakingabilitiesovertime.
2.Watchtelevisionshows,movies,andlistentomusic
WatchingEnglishmoviesandTVshowscanhelpstudentsimprovetheirlisteningskills,accentaccuracy,andEnglishcolloquialisms.Decodingthemeaningoflyricsandthecontextofthesongcanalsohelpstudentsenhancetheirunderstandingofthelanguage.
3.PracticespeakingEnglishregularly
Consistencyiskeywhenitcomestoimprovingone’sspeakingability.StudentsmustpracticeusingEnglishasmuchastheycanintheirdlylives.EngaginginconversationswithclassmatesandteachersinEnglishoverextracurricularactivitiessuchasdrama,debate,andpublicspeakingclubscanimproveastudent’sspeakingskills.
