Ifyouhaveeverhadanoperation,youwerefirstputtosleepwithagas

youbreathedorbyachemicalinjectedintoyourbody.Medicalworkers

intheUnitedStatesofAmericaandEuropehaveusedthesemethodsin

Foryearshelivedinpoverty,savinghismoneyforhisproject.

Fortunately,hesucceededingettingfinancialhelpfromtwobusinessmen

inexchangeforatwo-thirdsinterestinhisinvention.Withthisextra

money,Matzeligerfinallyachievedwhathewasafter:Alastingmachine

thatcouldturnoutacompleteshoe.Hismachineindeedchangedtheshoe

industry.Itnotonlygreatlyincreasedproductionbutcutthecostof

shoesbyhalf.By1889thedemandforthenewlastingmachinebecame

worldwide.
