Jupiter'sX-rayflares,showingsurprisingsimilaritiestoterrestrialionaurora.Planetary-scaleelectromagneticwaves

areobservedtomodulate(调节)electromagneticioncyclotronwaves,periodicallycausingheavyionstoprecipitate

andproduceJupiter'sX-raypulses.Ourfindingsshowthationauroraesharecommonmechanismsacrossplanetary

INTRODUCTION

Aurorae,observedfromplanetaiypolarregionsacrossthesolarsystem,aredisplaysoflightthatareproduced

whenenergeticparticlesprecipitatealongmagneticfieldlinesandtransfertheirenergytotheatmosphere.Jupiter's

softx-rayauroraeareproducedbyenergetic卜(MeV)(电子伏)]heavyions(SandO),originallyfromthemoonlo's

(木卫—的)volcanicactivities.ThedynamicX-rayemissionsoftenpulsewitharegularbeatofafewtensofminutes.

Thespectacularquasi-periodic(准周期性的)auroralpulsationsatJupiterhavealsobeenobservedinultraviolet

(UV),infrared,andradioemissions.TheX-rayauroraearepredominatelyconfined(主要局限于)lotheregion

polewardofJupiter'smainaurora,connectingtoJupiter'soutermagnetosphereviamagneticfieldlines.Themapping

oftheemissionsleadstothesuggestionthattheparticleprecipitationsweredrivenbymagneticreconnection.

However,observationsshowthatthex-raypulsationslastforseveralJupiterdaysorlonger,evidencingthatthedriver

maynotbeatransientprocesslikemagneticreconnection.

Todate,40yearsaftertheirdiscovery,themechanismsthatcausetheseX-rayauroraeremainunknown.

Simultaneousmeasurementsofthemagnetosphericenvironmentandtheauroralemissionsarecriticaltorevealing

theirdrivingmechanisms.Here,wepresentobservationsofJupiter'suniquex-rayauroraewithsimultaneousinsitu

measurementsfromthemagnetosphere.Inthisstudy,werevealthephysicaldriverforJupiter'spulsatingx-ray

emissionsbyanalyzingsimultaneousinsitumeasurementsfromJunoandremotespectroscopicimagingby

XMM-Newtontelescope(XMM,牛顿卫星)during16and17July2017.XMM'sEuropeanPhotonImagingCamera

(EPIC-pnandMOS)instrumentsprovidedspatial,spectral,andtimingdataofJupiterforacontinuous26-hour(~2.6

Jupiterrotations)observationfrom18:26UTon16Julyto22:13UTon17July,whichwasshiftedtoaccountforthe

〜46-minlighttraveltimebetweenJupiterandEarth.ThisXMMobservationwasplannedtocoincidewiththetime

whenNASA'sJunospacecraftwasmovingfrom62to68RJ(1RJ=71492km)radiallyawayfromtheplanetinthe

SouthernHemisphereinthepredawnsectorbetween-0400and0430magnetosphericlocaltime(MLT).
