Theterm'qualitycontrol'cameintocommonuseinthe1950sbecauseofW.EdwardDeming.His'FourteenPoints'havebecomethebibleforqualitycontrolspecialists.Whenthepost-warworldreturnedtoregularmanufacturing,Demingsaidthatinspectingproductqualityaftertheyweremadewasunacceptable.Instead,heproposedaprocessknownas'statisticalqualitycontrol'.Itwouldusecloselymonitoredperformancemeasurestocontrolqualitywhileaproductwasbeingmade.Thegoalofstatisticalqualitycontrolwastogatherdatathatwouldallowfortheconstantimprovementofmanufacturingprocesses.Thiswouldinturnimprovequalitycontrol.

AnotherimportantprincipleofDeming'sbeliefswasthatuppermanagementshouldberesponsibleforqualityfailures.Hestronglybelievedthatitwaspossiblefortheworkerstoworkhardtoproducethehighestqualityproductsiftheyweregiventherighttoolsandworkingenvironment.InDeming'sownwords,'thebasiccauseofsicknessinAmericanindustryandtheresultingunemploymentisafailureoftopmanagementtomanage.'Hebelievedthatstrongleadershipledtoamotivatedworkforce.
