Theprocessofrecyclingcangivethingsnotonlyanewlife
but,insomecases,adifferentone.Glassbottles,forexample,
canbecomedrinkingglasses.
First,thebaseisremovedfromthebottle.Thenthebottleis
turnedupsidedownandtheneckisattachedtothebase.The
usedbottlethatwouldhavebeenthrownawayhasnowbecomea
good-lookingdrinkingglass.
Itisnoteasytomakethishappen,though.Thebiggestproblem
ishowtoattachthebasetotheneckofthebottleturnedupside
down.
TwoSouthAfricanbusinessmen,SeanPenrithandPhilipTetley,
lookedforalargeglassmanufacturerthatcoulddoit.Butthey
hadnoluck.Sotheyexperimentedforeightmonths.Aftermany
bottleswerebroken,theyfoundaway.
Theircompany,calledGreenGlass,wonaBusinessoftheYear
awardin1994.Itwasvotedamongthebestnewbusinessesin
SouthAfrica.Theinventorsreceivedworldwidepatentrights
toowntheprocesstheydeveloped.
Morerecently,theGreenGlassideahasexpandedintomarkets
inEuropeandtheUnitedStates.
GreenGlassU.K.saysonitsWebsitethatitnowmakes150,000
glassesperyear.ThefactoryinCornwall,England,employs10
people.
Thecompanysaysitsaves90percentoftheenergynormallyused
tomakerecycledglasses.Theenergyissavedbecausetheglass
isnotmelted.Theglassisheated,however,tostrengthenit.
