ScientistsfromtheBritishAntarcticSurveywerethefirsttodiscoverahuge"hole"intheozoneoverAntarcticain
1985.TheevidencequicklypointedtoCFCgases,whichwereinventedinthe1920s,andwerewidelyusedin
refrigeration.Extraordinarily,globalactionwasrapidlyagreedtodealwithCFCsandtheMontrealProtocoltolimit
thesesubstancescameintobeingin1987.Atotalglobalbanonproductioncameintoforcein2010.
Now,thenewlydiscoveredfournewgasescandestroyozoneandaregettingintotheatmospherefromasyet
unidentifiedsources.ThreeofthegasesareCFCsandoneisahydrochlorofluorocarbon(HCFC),whichcanalso
damageozone.
Theresearchhasshownthatfourgaseswerenotaroundintheatmosphereatalluntilthe1960s,whichsuggests
theyareman-made.Thescientistsdiscoveredthegasesbyanalyzingpolarsnowpack.Airfromthissnowisanatural
archiveofwhatwasintheatmosphereupto100yearsago.Theresearchersalsolookedatmodernairsamples,collected
atremoteCapeGriminTasmania.
Theyestimatethatabout74,000tonnesofthesegaseshavebeenreleasedintotheatmosphere.Twoofthegasesare
accumulatingatsignificantrates.However,theydon'tknowwherethenewgasesarebeingreleasedfromandthis
