Thee-noseusedasetofgassensorstoassessT-shirtswornbyparticipants.Onegroupof

humansmellersweregivenpairsoftheseshirtsandaskedtoratehowsimilartheysmelt.Thosein

theothergroupwereaskedtoratethesmellsofindividualT-shirtsonfivedimensions(维度):

pleasantness,intensity,attractiveness,competenceandwarmth.Bothapproachesproducedthe

sameresult.TheT-shirtsoffriendssmeltmoresimilartoeachotherthandidtheT-shirtsof

strangers.

howclosetheyfelttotheirfellowgamerbyoverlappingtwocircles(onerepresentingthemselves,

theothertheirpartner).Themoresimilarthetwoelectronicsmellsignatureswere,thegreaterthe

overlap.Participantsalsoratedthequalityoftheirinteractioninthegamealong12dimensionsof

feelingsthatdefinefriendship,Similarsmellswereconsistentwithpositiveratingsfornineofthese

dimensions.However,twoparticipantssmellingalikedidnotmeantheywereanymoreaccurateat

themirroringgamethanothers.

Whysmellmightplayaroleinformingfriendshipsremainsobscure.Otherqualitiesrelatedto

beingfriends,includingage,appearance,andeducation,areeitherimmediatelyobviousorrapidly

whomeverysettledargumentofmodernitymustberewritten,butthistimewiththeirengagement.”

Eventakingthesedifficultiesintoaccount,however,itseemsobviousthatbirdwatchingand

knittingareclassichobbies.Theyareenjoyable,involvepracticeandrewardeffort,andtheyare

givenimmediateaccesstoagroupwiththesameinterests.Theyarethesortsofhobbiesadvice

columnists(专栏作家)haveinmindwhenpeoplewriteinabouttheirimbalancedlives.It's

interesting,then,thatnotoneofmytwoclearlyhobby-havingfriendswouldadmittothepractice.

Theywomedthattheirhobbies,whichgivethempleasureandkeepthemfarfromtheir

computers,madethemseemliketheyhadtoomuchleisuretimeandtooLewinnerresourcesthat

wouldenablethemtonaturallyavoidboredom.Theyarefullypaid-upmembersofsociety,with

busylives,fulfillinginterpersonalrelationshipsand,again,hobbiesthatmakethemhappy.It'sjust

Onemajorsourceofthesedifferencesisthewidespreaduseofartificial(人造的)light,which

hasledtochangesinthesleeppatternsintheindustrializedworld.Itisthoughtthattodaywesleep
