①Economicdevelopmentisnecessaryifwewanttoimprovesociety.Thereesatimewhentheoldmustgivewaytothenew，anditisnotpossibletopreserveeverythingfromourpastaswemovetowardsthefuture.Findingandkeepingtherightbalancebetweenprogressandtheprotectionofculturalsitescanbeabigchallenge.

②Bigchallenges，however，cansometimesleadtogreatsolutions.Inthe1950s，theEgyptiangovernmentwantedtobuildanewdamacrosstheNileinordertocontrolfloods，produceelectricity，andsupplywatertomorefarmersinthearea.Buttheproposalledtoprotests.WaterfromthedamwouldlikelydamageanumberoftemplesanddestroyculturalrelicsthatwereanimportantpartofEgypt’sculturalheritage.Afterlisteningtothescientistswhohadstudiedtheproblem,andcitizenswholivednearthedam，thegovernmentturnedtotheUnitedNationsforhelpin1959.

③AmitteewasestablishedtolimitdamagetotheEgyptianbuildingsandpreventthelossofculturalrelics.Thegroupaskedforcontributionsfromdifferentdepartmentsandraisedfundswithintheinternationalmunity.Expertsinvestigatedtheissue，conductedseveraltests，andthenmadeaproposalforhowthebuildingscouldbesaved.Finally,adocumentwassigned，andtheworkbeganin1960.

④Theprojectbroughttogethergovernmentsandenvironmentalistsfromaroundtheworld.Templesandotherculturalsitesweretakendownpiecebypiece，andthenmovedandputbacktogetheragaininaplacewheretheyweresafefromthewater.In1961，Germanengineersmovedthefirsttemple.Overthenext20years,thousandsofengineersandworkersrescued22templesandcountlessculturalrelics.Fiftycountriesdonatednearly$80milliontotheproject.

⑤Whentheprojectendedin1980，itwasconsideredagreatsuccess.Notonlyhadthecountriesfoundapathtothefuturethatdidnotrunovertherelicsofthepast,buttheyhadalsolearntthatitwaspossibleforcountriestoworktogethertobuildabettertomorrow.
