“Iwasawarethattheforestwasnotreal.However,theexperiencewasvivid,anditwaseasyfbrme

forestshavephysicalboundaries.Someoftheparticipantssaidtheyfeltcagedwhenthey

atsmalldetailslikemushroomsorinsects.Norcanvirtualenvironmentsimitateeverysensory

experienceofarealforest,likethesmellofdampleaves.Makingothersensations,likethefeelof

highlymeaningful.Inthefollow-ups,weaskedthemtoratetheextenttowhichtheyagreedwith

variousstatements,suchas"Ihaveagreatappreciationforthebeautyoflife95andotherstatements

relatedtocoherence,purpose,existentialmattering.Ourresultsshowedthatthemorepeople

indicatedthattheywere''appreciatinglife5themoretheyfelttheirexistencevaluable.Inthe

subsequentexperiment,wefurtherexploredthephenomenonbyaskingparticipantstowatchan

awe-inspiringvideo,theyalsoreportedhavingagreatersenseofexperientialappreciationand

meaninginlifeinthesemoments,comparedwiththosewatchingmoreneutralvideos.

Thefinalresultsconfirmedouroriginaltheory:appreciatingsmallthingscanmakelifefeel

moremeaningful.Butapplyingthatinsightcanbedifficult.Ourmodem,fast-paced,project-oriented

lifestylesfillthedaywithtargets.Weareonthego,attemptingtomaximizeouroutput.Thismakes

iteasytomisswhatishappeningrightnow.Yetlifehappensinthepresentmoment.Weshouldslow

down,letlifesurpriseusandembracethesignificanceintheeveryday.Afterall,weliveina
