Thenewreport,titledABittersweetSymphony,surveyed410participantsfromthemusic

industryandconductedfocusgroupsandin-depthinterviews.

Itsfindingshighlightthestrugglethatthoseintheclassicalmusicsectorfacewhenhaving

balanceworkandsupportingchildren,elderlyorsickfamilymembers.

Thestudysaidthatself-employedwomen——over85%ofwhomhaveparentingandcaring

responsibilities—reportedapaypenaltyof£8,000.

Womenwithcaringresponsibilitieswerealsofoundtobetwiceaslikelytoturndownwork

duetohighlygenderedworkandcaregivingstructuresinclassicalmusic.
