Chemicalsareafrequentpollutant.Whenwethinkofchemicalcontamination

widespread.Onestudysays7-20%ofcancersareattributabletopoorairand

pollutioninhomesandworkplaces.TheWHO,concernedaboutchemicals

thatpersistandbuildupinthebody,especiallyintheyoung,sayswemay"be

conductingalarge-scaleexperimentwithchildren'shealth".

Someman-madechemicals,endocrine(内分泌)disruptorslikephthalates(酉太

酸盐)andnonylphenol-abreakdownproductofspermicides(杀精子剂),

cosmeticsanddetergents-areblamedforcausingchangesinthegenitals,of

someanimals.Affectedspeciesincludepolarbears-sonoteventheArcticis

immune.Andthechemicalsclimbthefoodchain,fromfishtomammals,and

tous.

About70,000chemicalsareonthemarket,witharound1,500newones

appearingannually.Atleast30,000arethoughtnevertohavebeen

comprehensivelytestedfortheirpossibleriskstopeople.

Atfirstglance,theplasticbucketsstackedinthecomeroftheenvironmental

NGOofficelooklikeanyothers.Butthecontainersareanunlikelyweapon

inonepoorcommunity'sfightagainstoilcompanieswhichtheysayare

responsibleforwidespreadill-healthcausedbyyearsofpollution.Thevessels
