cohabitationareincreasing,withitnowbeingvirtuallythenormtocohabit

beforemarrying.Moreover,anincreasingnumberofchildrenareconceived

andbornoutsidemarriage.Lookingatthesestatistics,onemightreasonably

concludethatthefutureofmarriagelooksbleak,butmarriagestillremains

thepreferredwayoflifeforthevastmajorityoftheadultpopulation.Even

amongthosewhosefirstmarriagefails,amajorityaresufficientlyoptimistic

Whydopeoplemarry?InWesternsocieties,theemotionalaspectsof

marriagearestressed,andwhatLawrenceStonecallsaffectiveindividualism

prevails.Choiceofamateisinfluencedprimarilybythedesirefora

relationshipofferingaffectionandlove—although,asPeterBergerobserves,

the"lightningshaftofCupidseemstobeguidedratherstronglywithinvery

definitechannelsofclass,income,education,racialandreligious

background".Thetendencyforpeopleofsimilarbackgroundstomarry

(maritalhomogamy)isstrong,butthereisnoclearunderstandingofwhyit

occurs,orwhetherthedegreeofrigidityinmateselectiondiffersamong

thatthehighertheclassposition,thelessthehomogamy.
