Beforethe1830s,mostnewspapersweresoldthroughannualsubscriptionsinAmerica,usually$8to$10a
year.Today$8or$10seemsasmallamountofmoney,butatthattimetheseamountswereforbiddingtomost
citizens.Accordingly,newspaperswerereadalmostonlybyrichpeopleinpoliticsorthetrades.Inaddition,most
newspapershadlittleinthemthatwouldappealtoamassaudience.Theyweredullandvisuallyforbidding.But
therevolutionthatwastakingplaceinthe1830swouldchangeallthat.
Thetrend,then,wastowardthe“pennypaper”—atermreferringtopapersmadewidelyavailabletothe
public.Itmeantanyinexpensivenewspaper;perhapsmoreimportantlyitmeantnewspapersthatcouldbebought
insinglecopiesonthestreet.
Thisdevelopmentdidnottakeplaceovernight.Ithadbeenpossible(butnoteasy)tobuysinglecopiesof
newspapersbefore1830,butthisusuallymeantthereaderhadtogodowntotheprinter'sofficetopurchaseacopy.
Streetsaleswerealmostunknown.However,withinafewyears,streetsalesofnewspaperswouldbe
