ButIthinkitalsoreflectsthesenseofpridethatsalwaysbeen

partofthisschoolstradition.

BenjaminMays,whoservedasthepresidentofMorehouseforalmost

30years,understoodthattraditionbetterthananybody.Hesaid

一andIquote一〃ItwillnotbesufficientforMorehouseCollege,

foranycollege,forthatmatter,toproduceclevergraduates一

butratherhonestmen,menwhocanbetrustedinpublicandprivate

life一menwhoaresensitivetothewrongs,thesufferings,and

theinjusticesofsocietyandwhoarewillingtoaccept

responsibilityforcorrecting(those)ills.〃

Itwasthatmission一notjusttoeducatemen,buttocultivate

goodmen,strongmen,uprightmen一thatbroughtcommunityleaders

togetherjusttwoyearsaftertheendoftheCivilWar.They

assembledalistof37men,freeblacksandfreedslaves,whowould

makeupthefirstprospectiveclassofwhatlaterbecameMorehouse

College.Mostofthosefirststudentshadadesiretobecometeachers

andpreachers一tobetterthemselvessotheycouldhelpothersdo

thesame.

Acenturyandahalflater,timeshavechanged.Butthe"Morehouse

Mystique"stillendures.Someofyouprobablycameherefrom

communitieswhereeverybodylookedlikeyou.Othersmayhavecome

hereinsearchofacommunity.AndIsuspectthatsomeofyouprobably

feltalittlebitofcultureshockthefirsttimeyoucametogether

asaclassinKingsChapel.Allofasudden,youwerenttheonly

highschoolsportscaptain,youwerenttheonlystudentcouncil

president.Youweresuddenlyinagroupofhighachievers,andthat

meantyouwereexpectedtodosomethingmore.

Thatstheuniquesenseofpurposethatthisplacehasalways

infused一theconvictionthatthisisatraininggroundnotonly

forindividualsuccess,butforleadershipthatcanchangethe

world.

Dr.Kingwasjust15yearsoldwhenheenrolledhereatMorehouse.

Hewasanunknown,undersized,unassumingyoungfreshmanwholived

athomewithhisparents.AndIthinkitsfairtosayhewasntthe

coolestkidoncampus一forthesuitshewore,hisclassmatescalled

him“Tweed.〃ButhiseducationatMorehousehelpedtoforgethe

intellect,thediscipline,thecompassion,thesoulforcethatwould

transformAmerica.Itwasherethathewasintroducedtothewritings

ofGandhiandThoreau,andthetheoryofcivildisobedience.Itwas

herethatprofessorsencouragedhimtolookpasttheworldasit

wasandfightfortheworldasitshouldbe.Anditwashere,at

Morehouse,asDr.Kinglaterwrote,where〃Irealizedthatnobody

一wasafraid.〃

Notevenofsomebadweather.Iaddedonthatpart.(Laughter.)

Iknowitswetoutthere.ButDr.Wilsontoldmeyouallhadachoice

anddecidedtodoitouthereanyway.(Applause.)ThatsaMorehouse

Mantalking.

Now,thinkaboutit.Forblackmeninthe40sandthe50s,the

threatofviolence,theconstanthumiliations,largeandsmall,the

uncertaintythatyoucouldsupportafamily,thegnawingdoubtsborn

oftheJimCrowculturethattoldyoueverydaythatsomehowyou

wereinferior,thetemptationtoshrinkfromtheworld,toaccept

yourplace,toavoidrisks,tobeafraid一thattemptationwas

necessarilystrong.

Andyet,here,underthetutelageofmenlikeDr.Mays,young

Martinlearnedtobeunafraid.Andhe,inturn,taughtothersto

beunafraid.Andovertime,hetaughtanationtobeunafraid.And

overthelast50years,thankstothemoralforceofDr.Kingand

aMosesgenerationthatovercametheirfearandtheircynicismand

theirdespair,barriershavecometumblingdown,andnewdoorsof

opportunityhaveswungopen,andlawsandheartsandmindshavebeen

changedtothepointwheresomeonewholooksjustlikeyoucan

somehowcometoserveasPresidentoftheseUnitedStatesofAmerica.

Sothehistoryweshareshouldgiveyouhope.Thefutureweshare

shouldgiveyouhope.Youregraduatingintoanimprovingjobmarket.

Yourelivinginatimewhenadvancesintechnologyandcommunication

puttheworldatyourfingertips.Yourgenerationisuniquelypoised

forsuccessunlikeanygenerationofAfricanAmericansthatcame

beforeit.

Butthatdoesntmeanwedonthavework一becauseifwerehonest

withourselves,weknowthattoofewofourbrothershavethe

opportunitiesthatyouvehadhereatMorehouse.

Introubledneighborhoodsallacrossthiscountry一manyofthem

heavilyAfricanAmerican一toofewofourcitizenshaverolemodels

toguidethem.Communitiesjustacouplemilesfrommyhousein

Chicago,communitiesjustacouplemilesfromhere一theyreplaces

wherejobsarestilltooscarceandwagesarestilltoolow;where

schoolsareunderfundedandviolenceispervasive;wheretoomany

ofourmenspendtheiryouthnotbehindadeskinaclassroom,but

hangingoutonthestreetsorbroodingbehindajailcell.

Myjob,asPresident,istoadvocateforpoliciesthatgenerate

moreopportunityforeverybody一policiesthatstrengthenthe

middleclassandgivemorepeoplethechancetoclimbtheirwayinto

themiddleclass.Policiesthatcreatemoregoodjobsandreduce

poverty,andeducatemorechildren,andgivemorefamiliesthe

securityofhealthcare,andprotectmoreofourchildrenfromthe

horrorsofgunviolence.Thatsmyjob.Thosearemattersofpublic

policy,anditisimportantforallofus一black,whiteandbrown

一toadvocateforanAmericawhereeverybodyhasgotafairshot

inlife.Notjustsome.Notjustafew.(Applause.)

Butalongwithcollectiveresponsibilities,wehaveindividual

responsibilities.Therearesomethings,asblackmen,wecanonly

doforourselves.Therearesomethings,asMorehouseMen,thatyou

areobligedtodoforthosestillleftbehind.AsMorehouseMen,

younowwieldsomethingevenmorepowerfulthanthediplomayoure

abouttocollect一andthatsthepowerofyourexample.

SowhatIaskofyoutodayisthesamethingIaskofevery

graduatingclassIaddress:Usethatpowerforsomethinglargerthan

yourself.LiveuptoPresidentMaysschallenge.Be"sensitiveto

thewrongs,thesufferings,andtheinjusticesofsociety.z/Andbe

“willingtoacceptresponsibilityforcorrecting(those)ills.〃

IknowthatsomeofyoucametoMorehousefromcommunitieswhere

lifewasaboutkeepingyourheaddownandlookingoutforyourself.

Maybeyoufeellikeyouescaped,andnowyoucantakeyourdegree

andgetthatfancyjobandthenicehouseandthenicecar一and

neverlookback.Anddontgetmewrong一withallthosestudent

loansyouvehadtotakeout,Iknowyouvegottoearnsomemoney.

Withdoorsopentoyouthatyourparentsandgrandparentscouldnot

evenimagine,nooneexpectsyoutotakeavowofpoverty.ButI

willsayitbetraysapovertyofambitionifallyouthinkabout

iswhatgoodsyoucanbuyinsteadofwhatgoodyoucando.(Applause.)

So,yes,gogetthatlawdegree.Butifyoudo,askyourselfif

theonlyoptionistodefendtherichandthepowerful,orifyou

canalsofindsometimetodefendthepowerless.Sure,gogetyour

MBA,orstartthatbusiness.Weneedblackbusinessesoutthere.

Butaskyourselveswhatbroaderpurposeyourbusinessmightserve,

inputtingpeopletowork,ortransforminganeighborhood.Themost

successfulCEOsIknowdidntstartoutintentjustonmakingmoney

一rather,theyhadavisionofhowtheirproductorservicewould

changethings,andthemoneyfollowed.(Applause.)

Someofyoumaybeheadedtomedicalschooltobecomedoctors.

Butmakesureyouhealfolksinunderservedcommunitieswhoreally

needit,too.Forgenerations,certaingroupsinthiscountry一

especiallyAfricanAmericans一havebeendesperateinneedof

accesstoquality,affordablehealthcare.Andasasociety,were

finallybeginningtochangethat.Thoseofyouwhoareunderthe

ageof26alreadyhavetheoptiontostayonyourparentshealth

careplan.Butallofyouareheadingintoaneconomywheremany

youngpeopleexpectnotonlytohavemultiplejobs,butmultiple

careers.

SostartingOctober1st,becauseoftheAffordableCareAct一

otherwiseknownasObamacare一(applause)-youllbeabletoshop

foraquality,affordableplanthatsyoursandtravelswithyou一

aplanthatwillinsurenotonlyyourhealth,butyourdreamsif

youaresickorgetinanaccident.Butweregoingtoneedsome

doctorstomakesureitworks,too.Wevegottomakesureeverybody

hasgoodhealthinthiscountry.Itsnotjustgoodforyou,itsgood

forthiscountry.Soyouregoingtohavetospreadthewordtoyour

fellowyoungpeople.

Whichbringsmetoasecondpoint:JustasMorehousehastaught

youtoexpectmoreofyourselves,inspirethosewholookuptoyou

toexpectmoreofthemselves.Weknowthattoomanyyoungmenin

ourcommunitycontinuetomakebadchoices.AndIhavetosay,

growingup,Imadequiteafewmyself.SometimesIwroteoffmyown

failingsasjustanotherexampleoftheworldtryingtokeepablack

mandown.Ihadatendencysometimestomakeexcusesformenotdoing

therightthing.Butoneofthethingsthatallofyouhavelearned

overthelastfouryearsistheresnolongeranyroomforexcuses.

IunderstandtheresacommonfraternitycreedhereatMorehouse:

“Excusesaretoolsoftheincompetentusedtobuildbridgesto

nowhereandmonumentsofnothingness.〃Well,wevegotnotimefor

excuses.Notbecausethebitterlegacyofslaveryandsegregation

havevanishedentirely;theyhavenot.Notbecauseracismand

discriminationnolongerexist;weknowthosearestilloutthere.

Itsjustthatintodayshyperconnected,hypercompetitiveworld,

withmillionsofyoungpeoplefromChinaandIndiaandBrazil一

manyofwhomstartedwithawholelotlessthanallofyoudid一

allofthementeringtheglobalworkforcealongsideyou,nobodyis

goingtogiveyouanythingthatyouhavenotearned.(Applause.)

Nobodycareshowtoughyourupbringingwas.Nobodycaresifyou

sufferedsomediscrimination.Andmoreover,youhavetoremember

thatwhateveryouvegonethrough,itpalesincomparisontothe

hardshipspreviousgenerationsendured一andtheyovercamethem.

Andiftheyovercamethem,youcanovercomethem,too.(Applause.)

Younowhailfromalineageandlegacyofimmeasurablystrongmen

一menwhoboretremendousburdensandstilllaidthestonesfor

thepathonwhichwenowwalk.YouwearthemantleofFrederick

DouglassandBookerT.Washington,andRalphBuncheandLangston

Hughes,andGeorgeWashingtonCarverandRalphAbernathyand

ThurgoodMarshall,and,yes,Dr.MartinLutherKing,Jr.Thesemen

weremanythingstomanypeople.Andtheyknewfullwelltherole

thatracismplayedintheirlives.Butwhenitcametotheirown

accomp1ishmentsandsenseofpurpose,theyhadnotimeforexcuses.

Everyoneofyouhaveagrandmaoranuncleoraparentwhostold

youthatatsomepointinlife,asanAfricanAmerican,youhave

toworktwiceashardasanyoneelseifyouwanttogetby.Ithink

PresidentMaysputitevenbetter:Hesaid,zzWhateveryoudo,strive

todoitsowellthatnomanlivingandnomandead,andnomanyet

tobeborncandoitanybetter.〃(Applause.)

AndIpromiseyou,whatwasneededinDr.Maysstime,thatspirit

ofexcellence,andhardwork,anddedication,andnoexcusesis

needednowmorethanever.Ifyouthinkyoucanjustgetoverin

thiseconomyjustbecauseyouhaveaMorehousedegree,youreinfor

arudeawakening.Butifyoustayhungry,ifyoukeephustling,if

soon,helpingraiseanewbornandworkingnightshiftsbecametoo

much,sohestartedtakingbusinessclassesatatechnicalcollege

instead一doingeverythingfromdeliveringnewspaperstobuffing

hospitalfloorstosupporthisfamily.

AndthenheenrolledatMorehouseasecondtime.Butevenwith

ajob,hecouldntkeepupwiththecostoftuition.Soaftergetting

hisdegreefromthattechnicalschool,thisfatherofthreedecided

tocomebacktoMorehouseforathirdtime.(Applause.)AsFrederick

says,〃Godhasaplanformylife,andHesnotdonewithmeyet.〃

Andtoday,Frederickisafamilyman,andaworkingman,anda

MorehouseMan.(Applause.)AndthatswhatImaskingallofyouto

do:Keepsettinganexampleforwhatitmeanstobeaman.(Applause.)

Bethebesthusbandtoyourwife,oryoureyourboyfriend,oryour

partner.Bethebestfatheryoucanbetoyourchildren.Because

nothingismoreimportant.

Iwasraisedbyaheroicsinglemom,wonderfulgrandparents一

madeincrediblesacrificesforme.AndIknowtherearemomsand

grandparentsheretodaywhodidthesamethingforallofyou.But

IsurewishIhadhadafatherwhowasnotonlypresent,butinvolved.

Didntknowmydad.Andsomywholelife,Ivetriedtobefor

Michelleandmygirlswhatmyfatherwasnotformymotherandme.

Iwanttobreakthatcyclewhereafatherisnotathome一(applause)

一whereafatherisnothelpingtoraisethatsonordaughter.I

wanttobeabetterfather,abetterhusband,abetterman.

Itshardworkthatdemandsyourconstantattentionandfrequent

sacrifice.AndIpromiseyou,MichellewilltellyouImnotperfect.

Shesgotalonglistofmyimperfections.(Laughter.)Evennow,Im

stillpracticing,Imstilllearning,stillgettingcorrectedin

termsofhowtobeafinehusbandandagoodfather.ButIwilltell

youthis:Everythingelseisunfulfilledifwefailatfamily,if

IknowthatwhenIamonmydeathbedsomeday,Iwillnotbethinking

aboutanyparticularlegislationIpassed;Iwillnotbethinking

aboutapolicyIpromoted;Iwillnotbethinkingaboutthespeech

Igave,IwillnotbethinkingtheNobelPrizeIreceived.Iwill

bethinkingaboutthatwalkItookwithmydaughters.Illbethinking

aboutalazyafternoonwithmywife.Illbethinkingaboutsitting

aroundthedinnertableandseeingthemhappyandhealthyandknowing

thattheywereloved.AndIllbethinkingaboutwhetherIdidright

church,spendtimeandenergyandpresencetogivepeople

opportunitiesandachance.Pullthemup,exposethem,supporttheir

dreams.Dontputthemdown.

Wevegottoteachthemjustlikewhatwehavetolearn,whatit

meanstobeaman一toserveyourcitylikeMaynardJackson;to

shapetheculturelikeSpikeLee;tobelikeChesterDavenport,one

ofthefirstpeopletointegratetheUniversityofGeorgiaLawSchool.

Whenhegotthere,nobodywouldsitnexttohiminclass.ButChester

Soifyouvehadrolemodels,fathers,brotherslikethat一thank

themtoday.Andifyouhavent,commityourselftobeingthatman

tosomebodyelse.

Andfinally,asyoudothesethings,dothemnotjustforyourself,

butdontevendothemjustfortheAfricanAmericancommunity.I

wantyoutosetyoursightshigher.Attheturnofthelastcentury,

W.E.B.DuBoisspokeaboutthe"talentedtenth“一aclassofhighly

educated,sociallyconsciousleadersintheblackcommunity.But

itsnotjusttheAfricanAmericancommunitythatneedsyou.The

countryneedsyou.Theworldneedsyou.

AsMorehouseMen,manyofyouknowwhatitsliketobeanoutsider;

knowwhatitsliketobemarginalized;knowwhatitsliketofeel

thestingofdiscrimination.Andthatsanexperiencethatalotof

Americansshare.HispanicAmericansknowthatfeelingwhensomebody

asksthemwheretheycomefromortellthemtogoback.Gayand

lesbianAmericansfeelitwhenastrangerpassesjudgmentontheir

parentingskillsorthelovethattheyshare.MuslimAmericansfeel

itwhentheyrestaredatwithsuspicionbecauseoftheirfaith.Any

womanwhoknowstheinjusticeofearninglesspayfordoingthesame

work一sheknowswhatitsliketobeontheoutsidelookingin.

Soyourexperiencesgiveyouspecialinsightthattodaysleaders

need.Ifyoutapintothatexperience,itshouldendowyouwith

empathy一theunderstandingofwhatitsliketowalkinsomebody

elsesshoes,toseethroughtheireyes,toknowwhatitslikewhen

yourenotbornon3rdbase,thinkingyouhitatriple.Itshould

giveyoutheabilitytoconnect.Itshouldgiveyouasenseof

compassionandwhatitmeanstoovercomebarriers.

AndIwilltellyou,Classof2013,whateversuccessIhave

achieved,whateverpositionsofleadershipIhaveheldhavedepended

lessonIvyLeaguedegreesorSATscoresorGPAs,andhaveinstead

beenduetothatsenseofconnectionandempathy一thespecial

obligationIfelt,asablackmanlikeyou,tohelpthosewhoneed

itmost,peoplewhodidnthavetheopportunitiesthatIhad一

becausetherebutforthegraceofGod,goI一Imighthavebeen

intheirshoes.Imighthavebeeninprison.Imighthavebeen

unemployed.Imightnothavebeenabletosupportafamily.Andthat

motivatesme.(Applause.)

Soitsuptoyoutowidenyourcircleofconcern一tocareabout

justiceforeverybody,white,blackandbrown.Everybody.Notjust

inyourowncommunity,butalsoacrossthiscountryandaroundthe

world.Tomakesureeveryonehasavoice,andeverybodygetsaseat

atthetable;thateverybody,nomatterwhatyoulooklikeorwhere

youcomefrom,whatyourlastnameis一itdoesntmatter,everybody

getsachancetowalkthroughthosedoorsofopportunityifthey

arewillingtoworkhardenough.
