market.Duringthatsameperiod,eightdrugswerewithdrawnforreasonsof

safety,suchasthedietdrugfenfluramine(fen-phen,associatedwithheart­

valvedisease)andtheallergydrugSeldane(linkedtoheartan'hythmias).But

theVioxxrecallcreatedashockwavefortheAmericanconsumerlikeno

other.Manypeoplehadcometodependontheir"meds",andtheyexpected
