orchestraleaderPaulWhitemandecidedtoorganizeaspecialconcerttoshowthat

jazzwasseriousmusic.Gershwinagreedtocomposesomethingfortheconcert

beforeherealizedhehadjustafewweekstodoit.Andinthatshorttime,he

composedapieceforpianoandorchestrawhichhecalledRhapsodyinBlue.

Gershwinhimselfplayedthepianoattheconcert.Theaudiencewerethrilledwhen

theyheardhismusic.Itmadehimworld-famousandshowedthatjazzmusiccould

bebothseriousandpopular.

In1928,GershwinwenttoParis.Heappliedtostudycomposition(作曲)withthe

well-knownmusicianNadiaBoulanger,butsherejectedhim.Shewasafraidthat

classicalstudywouldruinhisjazz-influencedstyle.Whilethere,GershwinwroteAn

AmericaninParis.Whenitwasfirstperformed,critics(评论家)weredividedoverthe
