Oceanscanbecomewarmenoughinthesummerforhurricanestodevelop,

andtheoceansalsoretainsummerheatthroughthefall.Asaresult,the

hurricaneseasonintheAtlanticBasin,whichcomprisestheAtlanticOcean,

CaribbeanSea,andtheGulfofMexico,runsfromJune1throughNovember

30.Atleast25out-of-seasonstorms,however,haveoccurredfrom1887

through2003,and9ofthesestrengthenedintohurricanesforatleastafew

hours.

Hurricanesweakenanddieoutwhencutofffromwarm,humidairasthey

Hurricanesandothertropicalcyclonesbeginasdisorganizedclustersof

showersandthunderstorms.Whenoneoftheseclustersbecomesorganized

tropicalstormandisgivenaname.Bydefinition,atropicalstormbecomesa

Foratropicaldepressiontogrowintoahurricane,windsfromjustabovethe

surfaceoftheoceantomorethan12,000minaltitudemustbeblowingfrom

roughlythesamedirectionandatthesamespeed.Windsthatblowinopposite

directionscreatewindshear—differentwindspeedsordirectionatupperand

Ahurricaneconsistsofbandsofthunderstormsthatspiral(盘旋)towardthe

low-pressurecenter,or"eye"ofthestorm.Windsalsospiralintowardthe

center,speedingupastheyapproachtheeye.Largethunderstormscreatean

"eyewall"aroundthecenterwherewindsarethestrongest.Windsintheeye

itselfarenearlycalm,andtheskyisoftenclear.Airpressuresintheeyeatthe

surfacerangefromaround982hectopascals(百帕)inaweakhurricaneto

lowerthan914hectopascalsinthestrongeststorms.

Inalarge,strongstorm,hurricane-forcewindsmaybefeltoveranareawith
