Thefindingscomefromanexperimentofmorethan3,500hummingbirdflightsinsidea12-foot-longtunnel(通道)withabranchatoneendandafeederattheother.Movinglightpatternscastonthetunnelwallsinfluencehowthehummingbirdsseethingswhileflying.
Theresearchersexpectedthatifthehummingbirdswereusingvisualcluestocontroltheirforwardflightspeed,theywouldseethebirdsspeedorslowwithlightscastonthesidewalls.Butinstead,itseemedthattheyhadtheirownwayofknowinghowfasttogoforforwardflight.Whenmovingupordown,however,thebirdsbasedtheirmotorcommandsonthecastlightpatternstheysaw.
Thisspecialabilityhelpshummingbirdsflysafelyandquickly.Thisknowledgecouldbeusefulforimprovingdrone(无人机)technology,helpingengineersdevelopbetterwaysfordronestopredictandrespondtochangesintheirsurroundings.“Ifwecandevelopamathematicalmodelforthisvisualprocessing,itcouldbeveryusefulfordrones."saysBoCheng,amechanicalengineer,atPennsylvaniaStateUniversity.

Theresearcherscomparedchildrenindifferentkindergartengroups.Somewereofferedsensory-basedfoodeducation,whileothersweren't.Childrenwereofferedasnackbuffetcontainingdifferentvegetablesandfruittochoosefrom,andtherescarcherstookphotosoftheirplatestoanalysetheirwillingnesstochooseandcatthesefooditems.
Thefindingsshowthatsensory-basedfoodeducationincreasedchildren'swillingnesstochoosevegetablesandfruit,especiallyamongchildrenwhosemothershavealowereducationalbackground.Onaverage,childrenoflowereducatedparentstendtocatlessvegetablesandfruit.Thisishowfoodeducationgiveninthekindergartencanhelpevenoutdietarygapbetweenfamilies."
