now,heresthechallenge:today,theaveragefull-timeworkingwomanearnsjust77centsforeverydollaramanearns;forafricanamericanwomen,latinas,itsevenless.andinXX,thatsanembarrassment.itiswrong.andthisisnotjustanissueoffairness.itsalsoafamilyissueandaneconomicissue,becausewomenmakeupabouthalfofourworkforceandtheyreincreasinglythebreadwinnersforawholelotoffamiliesoutthere.sowhentheymakelessmoney,itmeanslessmoneyforgas,lessmoneyforgroceries,lessmoneyforchildcare,lessmoneyforcollegetuition,lessmoneyisgoingintoretirementsavings.

anditsallbadforbusiness,becauseoureconomydependsoncustomersoutthere,andwhencustomershavelessmoney,whenhardworkingwomendonthavetheresources,thatsaproblem.whenbusinessesloseterrificwomentalentbecausetheyrefedupwithunfairpolicies,thatsbadforbusiness.theyloseoutonthecontributionsthatthosewomencouldbemaking.whenanyofourcitizenscantfulfilltheirpotentialforreasonsthathavenothingtodowiththeirtalentortheircharacterortheirworkethic,werenotlivinguptoourfoundingvalues.wedonthavesecond-classcitizensinthiscountry--andcertainlynotintheworkplace.

and,ofcourse,itincludesthatnovelideaofrepealingtheaffordablecareact.(laughter.)fiftiethtimetheyvetriedthat--whichwouldmeanthemorethan7millionamericanswhovedonetheresponsiblethingandsigneduptobuyhealthinsurance,theydlosetheirhealthinsurance;andthe3millionyoungadultswhovestayedontheirparentsplan,theydnolongerhavethatavailable;takeusbacktothedayswheninsurerscouldchargewomenmorejustforbeingawoman.

andiwasupinmichiganlastweekandijustasked--idontunderstandfullythetheorybehindthis.idontknowwhyyouwouldresisttheideathatwomenshouldbepaidthesameasmen,andthendenythatthatsnotalwayshappeningoutthere.ifrepublicansincongresswanttoprovemewrong,iftheywanttoshowthatthey,infact,docareaboutwomenbeingpaidthesameasmen,thenshowme.theycanstarttomorrow.theycanjoinusinthis,the21stcentury,andvoteyesonthepaycheckfairnessact.(applause.)voteyes.

thisisnotsomethingweregoingtoachieveinaday.theresgoingtobealotofstuffthatwevegottodotoclosethepaygap.wegottomakeitpossibleformorewomentoenterhigh-payingfieldsthatupuntilnowhavebeendominatedbymen,likeengineeringandcomputerscience.womenholdlessthan6percentofourcountryscommercialpatents--thatsnotgoodenough.weneedmoreparentsandhighschoolteachersandcollegeprofessorsencouraginggirlsandwomentostudymathandscience.weneedmorebusinessestomakegenderdiversityaprioritywhentheyhireandwhentheypromote.fewerthanfivepercentoffortune500companieshavewomenatthehelm.

ithinkwedallagreethatweneedmorewomenincongress.(applause.)fewerthan20percentofcongressionalseatsareheldbywomen.clearly,congresswouldgetmoredoneiftheratiowas--(laughter)--evenedoutalittlebit.sowevegottoworkonthat.

andweveallgottodomoretomakeourworkplacesmorewelcomingtowomen.becausethenumbersshowthatevenwhenmenandwomenareinthesameprofessionandhavethesameeducation,theresstillawagegap,anditwidensovertime.soweregoingtokeepmakingthecaseforwhythesepoliciesaretherightonesforworkingfamiliesandbusinesses.andthisisallgoingtoleaduptothisfirst-everwhitehousesummitonworkingfamiliesonjune23rd.
