plentyoffreshfruitandvegetables-which,attimes,havebeenchallengingtobuyin

supermarkets.Shesays,"Thecoronavirushasremindedpeopleoftheweaknesswithin

ourglobalfoodsystem.Insuchadifficulttime,interestinself-supportrises."

4Butforthosewithlimitedspace,asolutiontogrowtheirownvegetablesliescloser

tohome—usingpots.SheilaBrandlivesinathird-floorflatinRotterdam.Shehas

managedtogrowtomatoesandeggplantsandisalreadyharvestingraspberries(木莓).

Shesaidthatwatchingtheplantsgrow"isveryexciting:'Oh,it'sgotanewleaf!"

October2019.Toassesstheimpactofthepandemic,anothersurveywasdoneduring

theApril/Maytimeframe.Over1,000year-ninestudentsfrom17secondaryschoolsin

SouthWestEnglandwereinvolvedinthestudy.

3Theteamfoundthat54percentof13-to14-year-oldgirlswereatriskofanxiety

priortothepandemic,withthatfiguredroppingby10percentduringlockdown.

Twenty-sixpercentofboysinthesameagegroupwereatriskduringtheinitialsurvey,

comparedto18percentduringlockdown.

4Manyoftheteensalsoreportedanincreasedsenseofwell-beingwhiletheywere

inlockdown.Boysreportedabiggerimprovementthangirls.Also,thosewhoreported

thelowestsenseofwell-beingpriortothepandemicexperiencedthegreatest

improvement.EmilyWidnallMSc,whowastheleadauthorofthestudy,saidthatshe

andherteamweresurprisedwhentheyfoundtheresultsofthesurvey."Howeverwhen

takingastepback,"shesaid,“weknowthatschoolformanyteenagerscanbequiet

anxiety-provokingintermsofexampressureandchallengingpeerrelationshipsincluding

bullying.Thishasbeenareallyrareopportunitytounderstandhowyoungerteenagers

feelwithouttheday-to-daypressuresofschoollife."

5Manystudentsalsoreportedfeelingagreaterconnectiontotheirschoolswith

increasedopportunitiestotalkwiththeirteachersdespitenotphysicallybeingatschool.
