diseaseworksasthebestpredictorofthebunch.ArecentstudybyChristopherHassallandThomas
Sherrattrepeatedthestudyusingmoresophisticatedstatisticalmethods,andconcludedthat
infectiousdiseasemaybetheonlyreallyimportantpredictorofaveragenationalIQ.
Supportforthishypothesiscomesnotonlyfromcross-nationalstudies,butfromstudiesof
individuals.Therehavebeenmanystudies,forexample,showingthatchildreninfectedwith
intestinalwormshavelowerIQlaterinlife.AnotherstudybyAtheendarVenkataramanifoundthat
regionsinMexicothatwerethetargetofmalariaeradicationprogramshadhigheraverageIQthan
thosethatwerenot.Tnpracticalterms,however,thismeansthathumanintel1igenceismutable.
IfdifferencesinIQacrosstheworldarelargelyduetoexposuretoinfectiousdiseaseduring
childhood,thenreducingexposuretodiseaseshouldincreaseIQ.
