Everyonewantstobeingoodhealth.Butwhatdoes“health”actuallymean?Well,itdependsonwhomyouask.Itevendependsonwhenyouaskthequestion.Ourattitudestowardhealthhavechangedsignificantlyovertime.

Inearlycultures,peopleusedtothinkabouthealthintermsoftheirphysicalbodies.Ifyourbodywasfreeofdisease,youwereconsideredhealthy.Overtime,however,ourunderstandingofhealthhasbroadened.Todayitincludesmentalandsocialaspects.Mentalhealthisaboutyourfeelings.Whenyouhavelotsofpositivefeelings,youareusuallymentallyhealthy.Socialhealthhastodowithyourrelationships.

Goodsocialhealthmeanshavingsatisfyingrelationshipswithothers.Inthemid-20thcentury,theWorldHealthOrganization(WHO)definedhealthasastateofcompletephysical,mentalandsocialwell-being.Thishashadabigeffectonhowpeoplethinkabouttheirhealth,andwhattheydotostayhealthy.

Tostayphysicallyhealthy,peopleeatwellandexercise.Tostaymentallyandsociallyhealthy,peopletakepartinactivitiestheyenjoy.Thismayincludereadingbooks,playinginstruments,takingcourses,orspendingtimewithfriends.

Culturalattitudestohealthcanstilldifferfromplacetoplace.Butmostpeopletodayagreeonthis:Goodhealthmeansfunctioningwellandfeelinggreat.

Itistruethattoday,inmanycountriespeoplepreferthinbodies.Butthisisnotalwaysthecase!InearlymodernEurope,peopleactuallypreferredbiggerbodies,becausetheyindicatedthatsomeonewaswell-fedandhealthy.Thisattitudedoesstillexisttodayinpoorercountrieswherehungerisagreaterconcern.

Forexample,inMauritaniainAfrica,ahighvalueisplacedonfatbodies.Perhapspeoplestrugglingwiththeirbodyimagesshouldconsidermovingthere!

Ingeneral,nowadays,thepreferenceforthinbodytypesseemstobegrowing.Inmyopinion,massmediahasplayedamajorroleinthis.Thesedaysweseesomanyimagesofthinbodiesthatit’seasytothinkthatthisbodytypeisthebest.However,beingtooskinnycanalsobeveryunhealthy.Infact,itcanbejustasunhealthyasbeingtoofat.Ithinkthateverybodyisdifferentandeverybodyisdifferent.Peopleneedtofigureoutwhatbodyshapeworksbestforthem.

Shinrin-yokucanbedefinedastakingintheatmosphereoftheforestinordertorechargethesoul.Immersingyourselfinanaturalgreenenvironmentnotonlyhasmassivementalbenefits,butithasalsobeenshowntohealthephysicalbodyaswell.

In1984,aclassicstudyfoundthathospitalpatientsrecoveredfromsurgeryquickeriftheirroomofferedaviewofnaturecomparedtothosewholookedoutonabrickwall.

ThemainideabehindtraditionalChineseexercisesistobringtogethermovementandstillness.ThisstandsincontrasttomanymodernandWesternformsofexercises,whichoftenencouragemoredemandingphysicalactivities.Researchersbelievethatdemandingphysicalactivitiesarenotfitforallgroupsofpeople.Forexample,theelderlyandthosewhoarephysicallyweakwillprobablybenefitmorefromgentlerexerciseslikeqigong.

Depressionratesaredifferentineverycountry.AccordingtotheWorldHealthOrganization(WHO),India,ChinaandtheU.S.havethehighestratesintheworld.Butsomeothercountriesdon’tevenrecognizetheexistenceofthisillness,letaloneitsnegativeimpacts.
