Chaplingenerallystrovetoseparatehisworkfromhisprivatelife;butinthiscasethe
twobecameinextricablyandpainfullymixed.Searchingfbranewleadinglady,he
rediscoveredLillitaMacMurray,whomhehademployed,asapretty12yearold,inTheKid.
Slillnotyetsixteen,LillilawasputundercontractandrenamedLitaGrey.
Chaplinquicklyembarkedonaclandestineaffairwithher;andwhenthefilmwassix
monthsintoshooting,Litadiscoveredshewaspregnant.Chaplinfoundhimselfforcedintoa
marriagewhichbroughtmiserytobothpartners,thoughitproducedtwosons,CharlesJrand
SydneyChaplin.
TheCircus(1928)
TheCircuswonCharlesChaplinhisfirstAcademyAward-itwasstillnotyetcalledthe
'Oscar'-hewasgivenitatthefirstpresentationsceremony,in1929.Butaslateas1964,it
seemed,thiswasafilmhepreferredtoforget.Thereasonwasnotthefilmitself,butthe
deeplyfraughtcircumstancessurroundingitsmaking.
ChaplinwasinthethroesofthebreakupofhismarriagewithLitaGrey;andproduction
ofTheCircuscoincidedwithoneofthemostunseemlyandsensationaldivorcesoftwenties
Hollywood,asLita'slawyerssoughteverymeanstoruinChaplin'scareerbysmearinghis
reputation.Asifhisdomestictroubleswerenotenough,thefilmseemedfatedtocatastrophe
ofeverykind.
Inthelate1960s,aftertheyearsspenttryingtoforgetit,ChaplinreturnedtoTheCircus
torereleaseitwithanewmusicalscoreofhisownposition.Itseemedtosymbolizehis
reconciliationtothefilmwhichcosthimsomuchstress.
CityLights(1931)
CityLightsprovedtobethehardestandlongestundertakingofChaplin,scareer.Bythe
timeitwaspletedhehadspenttwoyearsandeightmonthsonthework,withalmost190days
ofactualshooting.Themarvelisthatthefinishedfilmbetraysnothingofthiseffortand
anxiety.
EvenbeforehebeganCityLights,thesoundfilmwasfirmlyestablished.Thisnew
revolutionwasabiggerchallengetoChaplinthantoothersilentstars.HisTrampcharacter
wasuniversal.Hismimewasunderstoodineverypartoftheworld.ButiftheTrampnow
begantospeakinEnglish,thatworldwideaudiencewouldinstantlyshrink.
Chaplinboldlysolvedtheproblembyignoringspeech,andmakingCi(yLightsin[he
wayhehadalwaysworkedbefore,asasilentfilm.Howeverheastoundedthepressandthe
publicbyposingtheentirescoreforCityLights.
Thepremiereswereamongthemostbrilliantthecinemahadeverseen.InLosAngeles,

Mostleadershippositionsencouragebodylanguagethatshowspowerandconfidence.
Signalsincludestanding(all,gesturingonlyfromthewaistup,headstraightandforward,and
talkingwhilepointingtoothers,whichareobviouswaystoexercisecontrol.Butwhen
(eaching,thenonverbalsignalsneedtoshowadifferenttypeofleader.Thesesignalsconvey
warmthandunderstanding,remindingyourstudentsthatyouareapproachableandthereto
