Intheearly20thcentury,chargeaccountsbecamepopular.Withautomobilesandairplanes,peoplenowhadtheoptiontotraveltoavarietyofstoresfortheirshoppingneeds.Inanefforttocapturecustomerloyalty,manystoresandgasstationsbegantoofferchargeaccountsfortheircustomerswhichcouldbeaccessedbyacard.Unfortunately,peopleneededtocarrydozensofthesecardsiftheyweretodoadayofshopping.TextA-3ReadingA3

Acreditcardthatcouldbeusedatmultiplestoreswasnotinventeduntil1950.ItallstartedwhenFrankMcNamara,headoftheHamiltonCreditCorporation,andtwoofhisfriendswentouttosuppertodiscussaproblemcustomerin1949.4Thisparticularcustomerhadlentanumberofhischargecardstohispoorneighborswhoneededitemsinanemergency.Forthisservice,themanrequiredhisneighborstopayhimbackthecostoftheoriginalpurchaseplussomeextramoney.ButmanyofhisneighborswereunabletopayhimbackandhewasforcedtoborrowmoneyfromtheHamiltonCreditCorporation.TextA-45

Attheendofthemeal,McNamarawasshockedtodiscoverthathehadforgottenhiswallet.Tohisembarrassment,hehadtocallhiswifeandhaveherbringhimsomemoney.6

Mergingthetwoconceptsfromthatdinner—thelendingofchargecardsandnothavingcashonhandtopayforthemeal,McNamaracameupwithanewidea:acreditcardthatcouldbeusedatmultiplelocations.HediscussedtheideawithhistwofriendsandtheystartedanewcompanycalledtheDinersClubin1950.ReadingATextA-57

Insteadofindividualcompaniesofferingcredittotheirowncustomers,theDinersClubofferedcredittoindividualsformanycompanies.ThecompanieswhoacceptedtheDinersClubcreditcardwerecharged7percentforeachtransactionwhilethesubscriberstothecardwerechargeda$3annualfee.Inthebeginning,progresswasdifficult.However,theconceptofthecardgrewandbytheendof1950,20,000peoplewereusingtheDinersClubcreditcard.ReadingATextA-68
