Pheromonesaresubstancesthatserveaschemicalsignals

betweenmembersofthesamespecies.Theyaresecretedtothe

outsideofthebodyandcauseotherindividualsofthespecies

tohavespecificreactions.Pheromones,whicharesometimes

calledsocialhormones,affectagroupofindividualssomewhat

likehormonesdoanindividualanimal.Pheromonesarethe

predominantmediumofcommunicationamonginsects(butrarely

thesolemethod).Somespecieshavesimplepheromonesystems

andproduceonlyafewpheromones,butothersproducemanywith

variousfunctions.Pheromonesystemsarethemostcomplexin

someoftheso-calledsocialinsects,insectsthatlivein

organizedgroups.

Chemicalcommunicationdiffersfromthatbysightorscund

inseveralways.Transmissionisrelativelyslow(thechemical

signalsareusuallyairborne),butthesignalcanbepersistent,

dependinguponthevolatilityofthechemical,andissometimes

effectiveoveraverylongrange.Localizationofthesignal

isgenerallypoorerthanlocalizationofasoundorvisual

stimulusandisusuallyeffectedbytheanimalsmovingupwind

inresponsetothestimulus.Theabilitytomodulateachemical

signalislimited,comparedwithcommunicationbyvisualor
