OperationalAmplifierCircuits

Wehavebuiltvoltageandcurrentamplifiersusingtransistors.Circuitsofthiskindwithniceproperties(highgainandhighinputimpedance,forexample),packagedasintegratedcircuits(ICs),arecalledoperationalamplifiersoropamps.Theyarecalled``operational''amplifiers,becausetheycanbeusedtoperformarithmeticoperations(addition,subtraction,multiplication)withsignals.Infact,opampscanalsobeusedtointegrate(calculatetheareasunder)anddifferentiate(calculatetheslopesof)signals.

.Theoutputvoltageoftheopampislinearlyproportionaltothevoltagedifferencebetweentheinputterminalsbyafactorofthegain.However,theoutputvoltageislimitedtotherange,whereisthesupplyvoltagespecifiedbythedesigneroftheopamp.Therangeisoftencalledthelinearregionoftheamplifier,andwhentheoutputswingstoor,theopampissaidtobesaturated.TheoutputrangesoftheamplifierswebuiltaspartofLab

weresimilarlylimitedbythesupplyvoltage.

Anidealopamphasinfinitegain(),infiniteinputresistance(),andzerooutputresistance().Youshouldusethesetwoassumptionstoanalyzetheopampcircuitscoveredintheassignmentsbelow.Aconsequenceoftheassumptionofinfinitegainisthat,iftheoutputvoltageiswithinthefinitelinearregion,wemusthave.Arealopamphasagainontherange-(dependingonthetype),andhenceactuallymaintainsaverysmalldifferenceininputterminalvoltageswhenoperatinginitslinearregion.Formostapplications,wecangetawaywithassuming.
