Whentheteambegananalyzingthedata,theywereshockedtoseethatbirdsnewtotheflocktookthe
initiativetobabysitthosebornwithinit,andviceversa.Andtheteamalsofoundthatindividualbirdsthathelped
nonrelativesonebreedingseasonlaterhadtheirgooddeedsrepaid,sometimesrepeatedly.“Tome,thatsounds
likefriendship,”saidDr.Earl,abiologistatCornellUniversityandanauthorofthepaper.
Theideathatanimalsmightestablishfriendshipswithunrelatedindividualsgeneratedheateddebatesamong
