ortantcontributionstoSkopostheory.Hetookthepurposeofatextastheprimarycriterionfortranslation,replacingtheequivalencetheoryandcreatingSkopostheory.Hebelievesthattranslationisapurposefulactivity,andtranslatorsshouldchoosetranslationstrategiesandmethodsaccordingtothetargetcontextandtheexpectationsoftargetreaders.Inaddition,Vermeerproposesthatthepurposeoftranslationdeterminestranslationstrategiesandmethods.Fromthisperspective,intheprocessoftranslation,thetranslatorcandeterminethespecifictranslationmethodsandskillsofthetargettextinaspecificenvironmentaccordingtotheexpectedfunctionofthetargetlanguage,combinedwith“socialandculturebackgroundknowledge”“expectation”“sensitivity”and“communicativeneedsofthetargetreader”AccordingtotheresearchersofSkopostheory,translationisacommunicativeactwhosepurposedeterminesthetranslationintention.Inotherwords,thetranslationmethodisdeterminedbythetranslationpurpose.Later,asthesecondgenerationleaderofSkoposTheory,Nordproposedtheprincipleof“fidelityplusfunction”onthebasisoftheanalysisofSkoposTheoryandincorporateditintofunctionaltranslationtheory.“Fidelity”meansthatthetranslatorneedstobeloyaltotheoriginalauthorandrespecttheauthor’sintentions,while“functionality”meansthatthemodelofthetargettextshouldactaccordingtothetargetlocale.Thisenhancestherelationshipbetweenthetranslatorandthetargetaudience.3.2BasicRulesofSkoposTheoryVermeerputsforwardthreebasicprinciplesofSkopostheory,namelytheskoposrule,thecoherentruleandthefidelityrule.Translationshouldproducethedesiredeffectaccordingtothecontextandcultureofthetargetlanguage.Theentiretranslationprocessisdeterminedbyitspurpose,whichmeansthattheeffectdefinesthemethod;however,translationactivitieshavemultiplepurposes,whicharefurthercategorizedintothreegroups:thetranslator’spurpose,thepurposeofthetranslatedversion,andthepurposeofthespecifiedtranslationmethod.Usually,“skopos”referstothecommunicativepurposeofthetranslatedversion,i.e.,thecommunicativepurposeofthetranslatedversiongiventothetargetreadersinthetargetsocialandculturalcontext.Therefore,thetranslatorshoulddefinethespecificpurposeoftranslationaccordingtotheparticulartranslationcontextanddecidewhichtranslationmethodshouldbeusedinordertofulfillthatpurpose.Vermeerarguesthatalltextsarecreatedforspecificpurposesandtheyaremeaningfulwhentheyservethosepurposes.InthetranslationofInternetbuzzwords,duetothespecialfunctionofthetext,translatorscanusedifferenttranslationmethodstomeetdifferentcommunicativeneeds,suchasliteraltranslation,paraphrase,freetranslationorannotation.Thepurposeistofurtherconveytheculturalconnotationandexternalpublicityofthesourcetext.Thecoherentruleimpliesthatthetargettextmustmeetthestandardofcoherencewithinthediscoursethetargetreadersareabletounderstandthetargettextinthecommunicativeenvironmentaswellasintheacceptedculturalcontext,whichrequiresthetranslatortouseauthenticlanguageasmuchaspossibleinaccordancewiththeculturalpracticesofthetargetcountry,andtoavoidtheuseofvocabularyorexpressionsthatconflictwiththenativecustomsorsocialbackgroundofthetargetlanguage.Inotherwords,thetargettextmustbemeaningfulandacceptabletothetargetreaders,whilethesentencestructurecanbeadjustedaccordingtotheneedsofthetargetreaders.Duringthetranslationprocess,thetranslatormayadjustexpressionsorrewritecertainsentencestoretainimportantinformationandreduceirrelevantinformationsothatthelogicalstructureofthetranslatedversioncanbepresentedtothetargetreaders.Accordingtotherequirementsandpurposesoftranslation,thereshouldbenoChinglishinthetranslatedtext.Inaddition,whileaccuratelyconveyingtheculturalinformationofthesourcetext,thetranslator’shabitsofexpressionandmodesofthinkingshouldbeconsistentwiththetargetlanguageinordertoachievefunctionalequivalenceandfulfilltheintendedpurposeofthetargetlanguage.Theprincipleoffidelity,referstotheconsistencyofthesourcetextandthetargettextacrossdisciplines.Thisimpliesfidelitytothesourcetext,butthedegreeandformoffidelitydependsonthepurposeofthetranslationandthetranslator’slevelofunderstandingofthesourcetext.Inordertoachievethis,thetranslatordoesnothavetotranslatewordforword,butcanimitateorrecreatebasedontheoriginalcontent.Inotherwords,thetranslatorcantranslatebasedonthepurposeofthesourcetextwhileremainingfaithfultoit.Theprincipleoffidelityisespeciallyimportantinthetranslationofacademicpapersduetotheirspecialcharacteristics.FromthepointofviewofSkopostheory,basedonthedifferencesbetweenChineseandWesternculturesandtheacceptabilityoftranslation,thetranslatorcanmaketheInternetbuzzwordsconveythemessagebetterandconveyChinesecultureaswellastheimageofthecountryaccordingtothepurposeandfunctionoftranslation.AmongthethreeprinciplesofSkopostheory,thepurposeruleplaysthemostimportantrole,whiletheprinciplesofcoherenceandfaithfulness,asauxiliaryprinciples,shouldbesubordinatedtothepurposerule.Inotherwords,thepurposeruleisuniversallyapplicable,whilethecoherenceruleandthefidelityrulearespecialrules.Ifthepurposeprinciplerequiresthatthetargettextfunctiondifferentlyfromthesourcetext,thefidelityruledoesnotapply.Furt
