economicfootprintsfitwelltogether.WhenM&Slaunchedits"PlanA"sustainabilityprogrammein2007,it
wasbelievedthatitwouldcostover$200millioninthefirstfiveyears.However,theinitiativehadgenerated
$105millionby2011/12.
Whenwepreventphysicalwaste,increaseenergyefficiencyorimproveresourceproductivity,wesave
money,improveprofitabilityandenhancecompetitiveness.Infact,thereareoftenhuge"quickwin"
opportunities,thankstoyearsofneglect.
However,thereisaconsiderablegapbetweenleading-edgecompaniesandtherestofthepace.Therearc
fartoomanycompaniesstilldelayingcreatingaleanandgreenbusinesssystem,arguingthatitwillcost
moneyorrequiresizablecapitalinvestment.Theyremainstuckinthe"environmentiscost"mentality.Being
environmentallyfriendlydoesnothavetocostmoney.Infact,goingbeyondcompliancesavescostatthe
sametimethatitgeneratescash,providedthatmanagementadoptsthenewleanandgreenmodel.
Leanmeansdoingmorewithless.Nonetheless,inmostcompanies,economicandenviron-mental
continuousimprovementisviewedasbeinginconflictwitheachother.Thisisoneofthebig-gest

IconfessIenterthisinaskepticalframeofmindbelievingthatwetendtogetcarriedawayinourdesireto
reduceeverythingtothequantifiable.Butattheoutsetletmecelebratetwothingsdatadoesreallywell.
First,it'sreallygoodatexposingwhenourintuitiveviewofrealityiswrong.Forexample,nearlyevery
