IntroductionTheconstantdevelopmentofglobalizationandcross-culturalexchangeshasencouragedadtranslatorstoovercomethesimpletransformationoflanguage.Thetransferofculturalgoodsandthere-creationofabrandimagemakeadtranslationakeymeansofcommunication.AsaculturalsymbolthatunitesEasternphilosophy,history,culture,andwayoflife,teaproductionissubjectedtodoublescrutinywhenspreadacrossdifferentmarkets.Notonlymustitpreservethespiritualcoreofculture,butitmustadapttothecognitivesystemandpsychologyofconsumersinthetargetmarket.Existingstudiesfocusmoreongeneraladtranslationstrategies,butdonotpayattentiontoproductswithuniquecomplexityandculturalsensitivity."TeaQi"and"Gongfutea"arefullofHealthConceptsinChineseteacultureandaestheticrituals.Ifliterallytranslatedas"energytea"or"skillfultea",theycanconfusetheaudienceandevencreateaestheticbarriers.Thedilemmafacedbytranslatingsuchspecialculturalelementsrevealstheshortcomingsofthetraditionaltheoryofequivalenceinworkingwithcomplexculturalsymbols.Theconceptoftranslation,basedontheimplementationofthetargettextfunction,providesamethodologicalbreakthroughtakingintoaccountculturalidentityandcommercialfeasibility.Analysisofspecificexamples,targetedstrategiescanimprovethecross-culturalcommunicativeeffectofteaadvertisingandemphasizethefeasibilityofusingfunctionalmethodstobridgetheculturalgap.Whiletheimportanceofemotionsincommunicationisbeyonddoubt,seriousdebatehasarisenregardingthewaysinwhichitmightbestbeapproachedfromrhetoricalandpragmaticangle.InancientGreece,rhetoricwasseentobecloselyassociatedwithargumentationandreason,withemotionsviewedasbeingofasomewhatlowerorder.However,Aristotledevelopedtheideathatconclusiveargumentsandproofscouldbeacceptedmoreeasilywhenaperson’sspeechmovedthelistenertofeelanemotionorpathos(Rapp2005).Theinterpretationofemotionshasalsobeencontroversialfortheoriesofpragmatics.Ithasnotalwaysbeenclear,forexample,howtorespondtocertainchallenges,inparticulartheriskthatdifferentaudiencesmayinterpretemotionalclaimsindifferentways,theineffabilityofemotions—thelackofwordstodescribemeaningsthatareneverthelessconveyedbyatext—andthefactthattheyusuallyinvolvetheactivationofperceptualandmentalimages.Suchnonpropositionaleffectshaveeitherbeenexcludedfrompragmaticsor,ifacknowledged,haveremainedlargelyunstudied(foranoverview,seeWilsonandCarston2019).ChapterOneIntroductionTheglobalizationofbusinessandtherapidexpansionofinterculturalcommunicationhaveledtoadtranslationstartingtoplayanimportantroleinbridgingthelinguisticandculturalgap.Theproductionoftea,whichcarriesculturalheritageandsymbolism,hasgivenbirthtouniqueproblemsandopportunitiesinthefieldoftranslation.Teaadvertisingisnotonlyalanguageexercise,butalsoastrategicattempttoconveyculturalnuancesandbrandconceptsindifferentmarkets,whileincreasingtheappealofconsumers.Teleology,asafunctionalistmethodoftranslation,emphasizesthepurposeoftranslationandprovidesaframeworkfortheinteractionbetweentheaccuracyofthesourcetextandtheculturaladaptationoftherecipient.ExistingadtranslationstudiesoftenprioritizegeneralstrategiesandtheirapplicationincertainareassuchasTeleology.Removingtheoreticalgapsinproductsthathavedeepculturalconnotationsleadstoreflectionontheuniquenessofunderstanding.Thisstudyfocusesontranslatingspecificadvertisingslogans,buildingabridgebetweentheoryandpractice,andpromotingthesustainabledevelopmentofcasestudiesintranslation.Teleologyiswidelyusedinthetranslationofartisticandtechnologicaltexts,butthepotentialoftranslatingculture-relatedproductssuchasteahasnotbeenfullyexploredincommercialtranslation,especiallytea.Strategicanalysisofculturalandlinguisticasymmetryisasystematicandrepeatablemodelfortranslatorswhowanttobalanceaccuracyandcreativity.Thisknowledgeisespeciallyimportantforbrandsthatwanttobepopularindifferentmarketswhilestillmaintainingtheirculturalidentity.Inthecaseofincreasingconsumerdemandfortheauthenticityandrelevanceofthenarrative.ChapterTwoTheoreticalFrameworkofSkoposTheory2.1CorePrinciplesofSkoposTheoryInthe1980sHansJorgVermeerandKatharinaRiceproposedTeleologytore-examinetranslation-behaviorsdefinedbythefunctionalneedsofatargetaudience.Thebasisofthisparadigmisthelawofpurpose.Theexpectedfunctionoftranslation,whetherinformationtransferorentertainment,determinesthestrategicchoiceofthetranslator(Vermeer23),whichdifferssignificantlyfromthetraditionalmodelbasedonequivalence.Init,thepriorityisgiventocontextualadaptability,notlexicalprecision.Vermeeralsopointsoutthreeancillaryrules:logicthatensuresthatthetranslationofatextislogicallyconsistentwithinaculture;loyaltythatmaintainsareasonableconnectiontothesourcetext;andculturalspecificitiesthatrequirethatthechoiceoflanguagebeinaccordancewithculturalnormsoftranslation(see45-46).Thisflexibilityisespeciallyimportantinadvertising.Informationmustelicitanemotionalresponse,whileavoidingculturaltaboosandsymbolicdifferences.Asacritic,JeffersarguedthatTeleology'sgreatestcontributionwasthereleaseofthetranslator.Strictrestrictionsonthesourcetextnolongerhavetheoriginalmeaningforthetranslator,andthetranslatorisassignedtheroleofaculturalintermediarywhonegotiatesthemeaningratherthancopyingtheform(Jeffers,89).Thetranslationoftheterm"culturalsaturation"clearlydemonstratesthisliberation.Ifwetakeforexample"chaxy",theaestheticandphilosophicalaspectspresentintheprocessofpreparingteacannotbeliterallytranslatedas"teaart".RoughtranslationcancreatebarriersforpeopleunfamiliarwiththesubtletiesofEastAsianculture,reducingthisrichconcepttoasimplelabel.The"scopostheory"holdsthattranslatorsshoulduseculturallyacceptableformstorecreatesuchconcepts."Teaart"istranslatedas"ceremonialMaster".TheMasterswhopracticetearetainedtheessenceoftheconceptandawakenedeveryone'srespectfortraditionandart.Suchstrategicalignmentbridgesthegapbetweenculturalspecificityandcommercialpurpose,andalthoughtranslationhasacommunicativefunction,itdoesnotloseitsphilosophicaldepthandaestheticintegrity.Theuseofteleologygoesbeyondtheadaptationofvocabularyandextendstotheadaptationofsyntax,rhetoric,andstorytelling.Inthecontextofadvertising,iftheinformationistopromoteimmediateactionorstimulateanemotionalresponse,targetedadaptationofthistheoryguideisundoubtedlyessential.Inthecaseofblindtranslationof"teaZen",thebasicconceptoftranslatingaChinesesloganmayhavedifficultyechoinginthetargetcultureduetolanguagedifferences.Eveniftranslateddirectlyas"theunityofteaandZen,"thewordislikelytocauseasenseofconfusionoralienation.;paraphrasingtheteleologicalguide,theterm"teaembodiestheessenceofZenawareness"notonlyexpandsthelexicalcompositionandstructureofsentences,butalsoclearlyexpressesthebasicatmosphereofmeditation,maintainspoeticsandfitsintothelogicofunderstandingthetargetmarket.Thechoiceofmeansnotonlyguaranteescompliancewiththerulesofconsequence,butalsoconveysthespiritualcharmoftheoriginalwork,notlimitedtothesimplereproductionoftheoriginalwords.Finally,withfunctionalcompliancehavinganadvantageoverliteraltranslation,thetargetsymbolturnsintoakeytothebrand'shistorythatcancreateemotionalconnections,increasingitscross-culturalappealandtheeffectivenessofcommunicationindifferentmarkets.Theteleologicalconceptreinterpretstranslationasadynamicinteractionbetweenculturalnegotiationsandstrategicadaptation.Thecomplexityofadtranslationcanbeconfirmedbyitsprinciples.Businessneedsandculturalreceptivityarecloselylinked.Practitionersmakefocusedchangestomaintaintheintegrityofthesourcetextandatthesametimemeettheneedsofthetargetcontext,sothatbrandpositioninghasbothculturalauthenticityandglobalresonance.Suchafunctionalapproachenrichesthepracticeoftranslationandemphasizesthetransformativeroleoftranslationinpromotingcross-culturalexchangesandpromotingmarketinnovation.2.2GuidingRoleofSkoposTheoryinAdvertisingTranslationInthefieldofadvertising,Teleologyhascreatedaconsistentmethodologicalbasisbetweenbrandrecognitionandlocalconsumerpsychology.KatarinaReissclassifiesadvertisingas"operationaltext"aimedatstimulatingaction,soitisreasonabletodeviatefromtheoriginalcontentforthepurposeofstrengtheningconfidence(Reiss102).TheCoca-Colaslogan"tastethefeeling"waschangedto"unboundedjoy"("unlimitedjoy")inChina,replacingcollectiveemotionswithanoriginalsensualattractiontofittheConfuciandesireforharmoniousvalues.Thischangedemonstratestheapplicationofteleologicalrulesinpractice,andthegoalofthetranslatorismaximumemotionalparticipationthatexceedstheobservanceofliteralaccuracy.ChenHuangcriticized:thetargetedtranslationbringsthebrandstoriesinlinewiththeculturalaspirationsofconsumers,andthegrowthofmarketresonanceinthefieldofcross-culturalcommunicationhasalsobecomesignificant.Brandloyaltyincross-culturalcommunicationincreasedby22%.Thiscanbeexplained(ChenHuang,74).Apple's"thinkdifferently"advertisingcampaignwaslocalizedinJapanunderthename"Kaorupeople",whichisafairlytypicalexample.ThroughtheiconicsculpturalimageofAugusteRodin,Heconnectsscientificandtechnologicalinnovationwithintellectualimprovement.ThisvalueisdeeplyrootedinJapaneseaesthetics.Thisadaptationincorporatesthebasicconceptofteleology,whichisfocusingontheaudienceandfindingabalancebetweenglobalbrandsustainabilityandregionalculturalsensitivity.Promotionalactivitiesusingtargetedtranslationcause18%moreconsumerreviewsthanliteraltranslation(P.72ofChenandWang'sworks).ThesedatareflectthedualroleofteleologyasalanguagetoolandbusinesstoolthatallowsbrandstouseMessagesappropriatetolocalculturetoenterthemarket.Webadvertisingissomewhatdifferentfromothertypes.Asatechnologicalmedium,itattractsandreliesontechno-literateconsumers,peoplewhoingeneralaremorelikelytoactivelysearchforsuchtextsratherthansimplycomingacrosstheminadvertentlywhileflickingthroughamagazine,watchingtelevisionorlisteningtotheradio.Theemergenceofthisdynamicconsumerisverysignificantforthisstudy,sinceitdirectlyaffectsthreespecificelementsthatcharacterisewebadvertising(Janoschka2004;Labradoretal.2014):language,informationandlength.Manykindsofadvertisementsaredesignedtobeshort,withcatchyphrasesintendedtograbtheaddressee’sattentioninseconds.Webadvertisements,incontrast,areoftensomewhatsustainedinlength,andlongertextstendtoincludeinformationaboutaproductthatismorelikelytosatisfythecuriosityofthepotentialtechno-literateconsumer.Thepurposeofthisstudyistoshowhowsuchfeaturesbearacloserelationshiptotherhetoricalexpressionofemotions.Webadvertisingissomewhatdifferentfromothertypes.Asatechnologicalmedium,itattractsandreliesontechno-literateconsumers,peoplewhoingeneralaremorelikelytoactivelysearchforsuchtextsratherthansimplycomingacrosstheminadvertentlywhileflickingthroughamagazine,watchingtelevisionorlisteningtotheradio.Theemergenceofthisdynamicconsumerisverysignificantforthisstudy,sinceitdirectlyaffectsthreespecificelementsthatcharacterisewebadvertising(Janoschka2004;Labradoretal.2014):language,informationandlength.Manykindsofadvertisementsaredesignedtobeshort,withcatchyphrasesintendedtograbtheaddressee’sattentioninseconds.Webadvertisements,incontrast,areoftensomewhatsustainedinlength,andlongertextstendtoincludeinformationaboutaproductthatismorelikelytosatisfythecuriosityofthepotentialtechno-literateconsumer.Thepurposeofthisstudyistoshowhowsuchfeaturesbearacloserelationshiptotherhetoricalexpressionofemotions.Alladvertisingcanbeconceivedofasabasic,althoughcomplex,communicativeact:atoneendoftheprocessthecopywriterplaysthepartofinformation-providerandelicitorofcertainbehaviour;attheotherend,theaddresseebecomesboththeattention-giverandtheeventualadopteroftheproductorservice(Martínez-CaminoandPérez-Saiz2012,454-55).Similartooratorsinancienttimes,whosoughtthepositivejudgementoftheaudience,contemporaryadvertisersneedtodelivertheirmessagesothatittriggersthedesiredresponseinpotentialconsumers,thatis,toacquirethepromotedproductorservice.Itthereforeseemsreasonabletoexaminewebadvertisinglanguagefromarhetoricalperspectiveinordertoseehowpartofitseffectivenessisbasedontextsthatarelikelytobecreativelyandaestheticallyinteresting(McQuarrieandPhilips2008a).Contemporaryadvertisinghasoftenbeendescribedasexemplifyinggentlementalbiasinginsteadofheavyweightpersuasion(Simpson2001;Martínez-CaminoandPérez-Saiz2012;DelSaz-Rubio2018).Thiskindof“soft”persuasionappearstofavourinsinuationsthatappealtoconsumers’emotions,whilesettingasideopenanddirectstatementsbasedonreason.Suchanobservationisnotintendedtoseereasonasbeinginoppositiontothe“tickle”ofemotionalcuesemployedinadvertising,becauseinpracticemostadvertisementscanbeunderstoodasamixtureofthetwo.WhatIarguehereisthatinmostadvertisementsitispossibletoidentifyapreferentialtendencytowardsonedirectionortheotherand,assuch,itmightindeedbesuggestedthatcertainpassagesinadvertisingtextsdopursueanemotionalimpactontheconsumer.Thetransformativepotentialofteleologyissupportedbyitsabilitytocopewithnormativeandethicalchallenges.Healthclaimscontainedinadvertisementsforteaproducts,suchas"overheatinganddetoxificationcleaning",mustbecarefullyadjustedtothestrictregulationsoftheEuropeanUnionandothermarkets.Roughandliteraltranslationcanleadtoconsumermisunderstandingsandviolationsoflabelingrules,whichcandamagethebrandimage.Theteleology-basedmethodemphasizesthechoiceofexpressionsthatcorrespondtofunctions,forexample,"promoteinternalbalance",whichismoreinlinewiththeconceptofWesternhealthcareandavoidsunscientificindicationsofeffectiveness.Suchadjustmentsreflecttheaccountingtheoryofculturallyspecificfactorsandensurethattheefficiencyoflanguageadaptationcorrespondstolegalnormsandtheneedsoftheaudience.Whentranslationisdefinedasastrategiccross-culturalcommunicativebehavior,Teleologyfurtheramplifiesthetransformationofadvertising-fromsimplecommunicationbetweenlanguagestomultidimensionalpracticalactivitiesthatcombinemarketing,ethics,andculturalcommunication.Emotionsincommunication,however,arenotexemptfromrisks.JamesAverillnotesthatemotionsarenotsimplyfeelingslocatedinthemindoftheindividual,butratherexistintheinteractionthattakesplacesduringcommunication(2001).Toacteffectively,then,copywritersneedto“enter”theworldoftheaddressees;conversely,addresseesaffectedbyamessagehaveto“identify”withtheiraddressers.Averillalsoobservesthatemotionsareelusiveinnatureandmaynotbeexperiencedinthesamewaybyallparticipantsinthecommunicativeact.Thisapparentconundrumcanonlyberesolvedthroughrecoursetoatheoryofcommunication.ChapterThreeCoreFeaturesofTeaProductAdvertisingTranslation3.1LexicalSelectionCharacteristicsThechoiceoflexiconwhentranslatingadvertisinggoodsisarathercomplexprocess,associatedwithculturalcharacteristics,sensoryattractivenessandcommercialgoals.Advertisingofteadiffersfromadvertisingoftheusualcategoriesofproducts.Theyoftenuseprofessionaltermsthatcontainculturalcharacteristicssuchasterroir(terroircharacteristics),Chaki(CHITea)orgongfucha(KungFuTea)inanattempttoconveyauthenticityandtraditionalvalues.Thesetermsnotonlytranscendsuperficialmeaningandcontainrichcontextualsubtext,buttranslatorsmustprioritizefunctionalequivalenceratherthandirectliteraltranslation.Yange(Yanghe)seekstocombinehealthbenefitswithmentalbalance.ItisoftentranslatedintoEnglishas"holistichealth",whichisinlinewiththepopularWesternconceptofhealthwhilemaintainingitsphilosophicalmeaning(Zhang,56).Thistransformationisinaccordancewiththeprincipleoffocusadvocatedbygoaltheory,i.e.translationgivespreferencetoservingthetargetaudience,acceptingtheeffectandreplacingtheoriginallanguagewithabsoluteloyalty.CriticsZhangandWangemphasized,"thesymbolicbridgethathasculturalresonanceinteaadvertisingturnsesotericcontentintoeasilyunderstandableStories,attractingconsumerswhoappreciatetraditionandaspiretomodernity"(ZhangandWang,72).InthetranslationoftheJapaneseadvertisementforthegame,thisdualityisobvious."Ifancha"istranslatedintoEnglishas"theultimatedrinkoffirstpreparation",borrowingtermsfromthewineindustrytoconveyuniquenessandhighquality.Thankstothewell-knownvocabulary,culturalbarriershavebeeneliminated,andtheuniquenessoftheproducthasnotbeenweakened.Empiricalresearchhasconfirmedthismethod.Surveyshaveshownthatconsumersfindculturallyadjustedtermsmorereliablethanliteraltranslation,andconfidencelevelshaverisenby37%,highlightingthestrategicvalueoftargetedvocabularymatching(Liuetal.2007).,P.89).Thecomplexityofprocessingtechnicaltermsrelatedtoteaprocessinganddeclarationsofitsusefulnesstohealthhasincreased.Termssuchas"unfermented"(likegreentea)or"postfermented"(likepuerhtea)shouldbeaccuratelytranslatedtoavoidmisrepresentingscientificmeaning.TheChineseword"fermentation"isoftentranslatedas"fermentation",whichcannotaccuratelydescribetheprocessofmicrobialoxidationofpuertea.Terminologyencouragestranslatorstousemorefunctionallyappropriatetermssuchas"wetpile"or"maturationofmicroorganisms".Thus,byprovidingclarity,italsotakesintoaccounttherelevantregulatoryrequirementsofthetargetmarket(Chen112).Thisprecisionnotonlyprovidesprotectiontothereputationofthebrand,butalsoincreasesthelevelofconsumerawarenessforfurtherinformedpurchasedecisions.Reissnotedthatthetechnicalaccuracyoftranslatingteaadsisnotonlyalinguisticobligation,butalsoacommerciallynecessarycondition.Incorrectexpressionscanleadtoincreasedpenaltiesbyregulatorsanddamagetoreputation(Reiss78).EUlabellingregulationsrequirehealthclaimssuchas"detoxification"or"rejuvenation"tobebasedonscientificevidence,andtranslatorsmustbepersuasiveandatthesametimecomplywiththelegalframework.WhenChineseadvertisingclaimsthatoolongteahasthefunctionofcinchang(bowelcleansing),theterm"cinchang"istranslatedas"healthydigestivesystem"inaccordancewithEUregulations.ThiscarefuluseofLexiconreflectshowtheprincipleoffunctionalismcanharmonizemarketgoalsandethicalconstraintsregardingtheconformityandefficiencyoftranslations.ethicalconstraints,ensuringtranslationsarebotheffectiveandcompliant.3.2SyntacticStructureandRhetoricalFeaturesGradually,thesyntaxandrhetoricalstructureofteaadvertisingarerevealed,whichrepresentsastrategiccompromisebetweentheaestheticsofthesourcetextandtheperceptionofthetargetaudience.Chineseteaadvertisingcontainscontradictionsandmetaphors,aswellasunlokalizedexpressions.Thesestructuresaimtoevokepoeticresonance,suchasthe"infiniteending",arecharacterizedbysimplicity,andimportantrhythmandharmonyhavetheirowncharacteristics.IndirecttranslationintoEnglishandotherlanguages,thisoftendisruptsgrammaticalfluencyandweakenstherhetoricaleffect.Functionalismemphasizesfocus.Thetranslatorshouldadjustthestructureofthesentencetomatchthelanguagecharacteristicsofthetranslatedlanguageandmaintainpersuasiveness.TheChinesephrase"teaZenBlind"hasbeentransformedinto"tearevealstheessenceofconsciousness".ThisinterpretationexplainedtotheWesternvieweritsphilosophicalmeaning(Li34),retainingthepoeticandtonkiexpressionoftheartisticconception.Baker,inhiscritique,expressedtheviewthatadvertisingrhetoricaltechniqueshavethecharacteristicsofculturalcoding,andmetaphorsborrowedfromculture-sourcesshouldbere-examinedbyanalogiesinthetargetculture,andmaintainingemotionalstrengthisespeciallyimportantwhencoding(Baker117).TheEnglishtranslationofthephrase"teaislikelife,firstbitterandthensweet"("Teaislikelife:bitternessprecedessweetness")clearlyshowsaspecificargument.Thismetaphorusestheculturallinkbetweenbitternessandpersonalgrowthandultimaterewardtoconveymeaning,andintheWesternsettingtheconceptofthiskindisrelativelyweak.Directtranslationoftensimplifiesthemetaphorandlimitsitsunderstandingtocomparisonatthetastelevel.Usingapurposefuladjustmentmethod,informationcanbereorganizedandtransmittedwithamoreuniversalnarrativestructure.Ittranslatesas"life-liketeathattransformsdiversityintooriginality."Thistranslationrevealsfundamentalproblemsandbringsitresiliencetolife,whichisclosetorecognitionofperseveranceandself-improvementbyWesternsocialvalues.Analyzingempiricaldataintermsofbilingualtextsalsoconfirmstheeffectivenessofthisstep.Studieshaveshownthatthepracticeofpreservingrhetoricalstrengthincross-lingualcommunicationisconducivetoculturalconversionandeffective.Theexpressiveeffectofthesloganafterrhetoricaladjustmentisgreatlyimproved,andthecontentthatemphasizesonlytheliteraltranslationcancausea28%deeperemotionalresonance(Huandzhou63),whichprovesthatthedifferencebetweenthetwocannotbeignored.HandlingtheprayerstructureinChineseadvertisingmakesthingsdifficult.Phrasessuchas"tryt
