AStudyoftheTranslationStrategiesofCulture-loadedWordsinForeignPublicity1.Introductiona1.1ResearchBackgroundWiththedeepeningofglobalization,exchangesbetweenChinaandothercountrieshavebecomeincreasinglyfrequent,andtheimportanceofforeignpublicityhasbecomemoreprominent.Asabridgeforcross-culturalcommunication,thequalityofforeignpublicitytranslationdirectlyimpactstheshapingofnationalimageandthecompetitionforinternationaldiscoursepower.Foreignpublicitytranslation,asthetermsuggests,referstothepracticeoftranslatingforeignpublicitymaterials.InChina,theprimarytaskofforeignpublicitytranslationistotranslateChineseintoEnglishorotherforeignlanguagestoconveyChina'svoicetotheworld(HuXingwen&ZhangJian,2013).However,duetothesignificantculturaldifferencesbetweenChinaandtheWest,foreignpublicitytranslationisfilledwithnumerous"culture-loadedwords"thatcarryuniqueculturalconnotations.Thesewordsoftenbecomethemostchallengingaspectsoftranslation,hinderingtheeffectivenessofforeignpublicity.Culture-loadedwordsrefertothosetermsthatcarryspecificculturalinformation,reflectingthehistory,geography,customs,religiousbeliefs,andvaluesofaparticularnation.
Forexample,theChinesedragonsymbolizesgoodfortuneandnobilityinChineseculture,butinWesternculture,itisoftenassociatedwithevilandterror.Similarly,theconceptof"face"(mianzi)inChineseculturerepresentsdignityandreputation,butthereisnoequivalentconceptinWesternculture.Iftheseculture-loadedwordsarenothandledproperlyinforeignpublicitytranslation,itmayleadtomisunderstandingsorevenculturalconflicts,damagingthenationalimage.Inrecentyears,withthecontinuousimprovementofChina'scomprehensivenationalstrengthanditsrisinginternationalstatus,foreignpublicityworkfacesnewopportunitiesandchallenges.
Ontheonehand,Chinaneedstotellitsstorieswelltotheworld,disseminateitsvoice,andenhanceitsculturalsoftpower.Ontheotherhand,therearemanymisunderstandingsandbiasesintheinternationalcommunityregardingChina'sdevelopmentpathandvalues,whichurgentlyneedtobeclarifiedandguidedthrougheffectiveexternalcommunication.Underdifferentcultures,peoplehavevastlydifferentlivinghabits.Itgoeswithoutsayingthatpeoplealsoholddifferentviewpointsandperspectiveswhenitcomestounderstandingthings.Inaword,people'scustomsvarycompletelyunderdifferentculturalatmospheresandbackgrounds.Aswordsrichinculturalconnotations,culture-loadedwordsnaturallyexhibitdifferencesacrossdifferentculturalbackgrounds.Therefore,whenweengageinthetranslationofculture-loadedwordsinforeignpublicitytranslation,wearefacedwithvariouschallenges,suchassemanticcomplexityandlimitationsintheselectionoftranslationstrategies.Despiteextensiveresearchbyscholarsbothdomesticallyandinternationally,challengesremainintranslatingculture-loadedwords.TheoriessuchasEugeneA.Nida's"functionalequivalence"andLawrenceVenuti's"foreignization"providevaluableframeworks,butpracticalapplicationsoftenfallshortduetothecomplexityofculturalnuances.AsChina'sglobalinfluencegrows,theneedforpreciseandculturallysensitivetranslationsbecomesevenmorepressing.Toaddressthesegaps,thisstudyexplorestranslationstrategiesforculture-loadedwordsinforeignpublicity.Thepaperisstructuredasfollows:Chapter2reviewsdomesticandinternationalresearchonculture-loadedwordsandtranslationtheories;Chapter3analyzesthelinguisticcharacteristicsandcross-culturalchallengesoftheseterms;Chapter4proposesfivetranslationstrategies(literal,free,adaptation,loantranslation,andtransliterationwithannotation)supportedbytheoreticalframeworks;Chapter5examinespracticalapplicationsthroughcasestudiesintourism,literature,andpoliticalcontexts;finally,Chapter6summarizesfindings,discussesimplications,andidentifiesavenuesforfutureresearch.1.2SignificanceoftheResearchThesignificanceofthisstudyismultifaceted,offeringbothpracticalandeducationalvalueintherealmoftranslationstudies.Practically,itprovidestranslatorswithactionablestrategiestohandleculture-loadedwordsinforeignpublicitycontexts,enhancingtheclarityandculturalresonanceoftranslatedmaterials.ThisnotonlyaidsinprojectingChina'sglobalimagebutalsostrengthensitssoftpowerbyimprovingthequalityofforeignpublicityoutputs.Theresearchalsoaddressesreal-worldchallenges,suchassemanticcomplexityandculturalsensitivity,offeringsolutionsthatcanstandardizetranslationpracticesandguidetranslatortraining.Fromaneducationalperspective,thisstudyisinvaluableforEnglishmajors.Itequipsstudentswithadeeperunderstandingoftranslationtheories,suchasSkoposTheoryandfunctionalequivalence,anddemonstrateshowthesetheoriescanbeappliedinreal-worldscenarios.Byanalyzingcasestudiesindiversefieldsliketourism,literature,andpolitics,studentsgaininsightsintothenuancesofcross-culturalcommunicationandtheimportanceofbalancingsource-culturefidelitywithtarget-audienceaccessibility.Thisknowledgenotonlyenhancestheirtranslationskillsbutalsopreparesthemforcareersininternationalcommunication,culturalexchange,anddiplomacy,fosteringanewgenerationofcross-culturalcommunicatorscapableofnavigatingthecomplexitiesofglobaldiscourse.2.LiteratureReviewAsaspecialtypeoftranslation,translationinForeignPublicityisstillirreplaceableintoday'sstateofcontinuousdevelopmentofartificialintelligenceandlanguagemodels.Itisnecessaryfromtheperspectiveofnationalexchangeanddevelopmentatthemacrolevelandfromtheperspectiveofknowledgeacquisition.Fromthemacroperspectiveofculturaldisseminationandnationaldevelopment,thedisseminationofcultureisakeyforustoconnectwiththeworldandanessentialsteptoopenthedoortotheworld.However,duetothecomplexityoflanguageandculturaldifferences,itisoftendifficultforustoclearlyandaccuratelypresentthecoreofcultureinanotherlanguage.Atthistime,foreignpublicitytranslationplaysaveryimportantroleandrequiresourin-depthstudy.Andculture-loadedwords,asarelativelyspecialtypeofwords,haveanindispensablepositioninforeignpublicitytranslation.Moreover,thetranslationofcultural-loadedwordsandthechoiceoftranslationstrategieshaveasignificantimpactonthequalityofforeignpublicitytranslationandcanavoidtheproblemofwordsfailingtoconveytheintendedmeaning.Oneofthepurposesofthisstudyistoexplorethemeaningbehindculture-loadedwordsinordertobetterhandleculture-loadedwordsinforeignpublicitytranslation,disseminateChineseculture,andenhancenationalsoftpower.Fromtheperspectiveofdevelopingthepracticalskillsandfuturecareerprospectsofforeignlanguagestudents,masteringtheinternallogicandrelevantskillsofforeignpublicitytranslationisacrucialstepforus.Foranundergraduatemajoringinforeignlanguages,translationisaskillthatwemustmaster.WiththeemergenceofhightechnologiessuchasAI,theordinarytranslationfieldisgraduallybeingreplacedbyfasterandmoreaccuratetranslationtechnologies,buttherearestillsomefieldsthatrequirehumantranslationwithexactrenderingofmeaningwithculturaldenotation.Therefore,agoodstudyofforeignpublicitytranslationwill 3.1CharacteristicsofCulture-loadedWordsinForeignPublicity3.1.1RichCulturalConnotationsCulture-loadedwordscarryagreatdealofuniqueculturalinformationspecifictoacertaincountryorregion.Forexample,inChina'sforeignpublicity,theterm"Confucianthought"representsanentirephilosophicalandethicalsystemthathasinfluencedChinesesocietyforthousandsofyears.Itcoversconceptsrelatedtoeducation,morality,andsocialorder.Againstthebackdropofrichculturalconnotations,suchculture-loadedwordsarehighlyculturallydistinctiveandneedtobeinterpretedinthecontextoftheirculturalbackground.Thisisanimportantpointtopayattentiontoinforeignpublicitytranslationandalsooneofthegoalsofforeignpublicity.Bytranslating,weaimtoclarifythemeaningsbehindculture-loadedwordstoachievebetterpropagandaeffects.3.1.2LinguisticUniquenessCulture-loadedwordsoftenhaveuniquelinguisticformsandmaynothavedirectequivalentsinotherlanguages.InChinese,forexample,theterm"Wuxing(五行)"isnotonlydifficulttotranslatepreciselybutalsohasauniquepronunciationandwrittenform.Theconceptof"Wuxing"involvesthelayoutandorientationrelatedtotheflowofenergyintheenvironment,andthereisnosinglewordinmostforeignlanguagesthatcanfullycoveritsmeaning.Suchwordsrequirethecorrecttranslationstrategiestobeproperlyhandled.3.1.3ContextDependencyThemeaningsofculture-loadedwordscanvarygreatlydependingonthecontextinwhichtheyareused.Forexample,theword"dog"hasdifferentconnotationsinChineseandWesterncultures.InChineseculture,dogsareoftenseenassymbolsofinferiorityandareassociatedwithcoarsephenomenaandthings.However,inWesternculture,dogsareusuallydepictedaskindcreaturesandarepositivesymbols.Forinstance,insomeproverbs,"aluckydog"means"afortunateperson,"and"loveme,lovemydog"means"loveme,lovemydog"(whichisequivalentto"loveme,lovemydog"inChinese,meaning"lovebyassociation").3.2ChallengesinTranslatingCulture-loadedWords3.2.1DifferencesinCulturalConnotationsCulture-loadedwordsareatypeofvocabularythatemergesbasedonculture,aimingtoaccuratelyandappropriatelyexpresswordsrichinculturalcharacteristicsindifferentlanguages.Culture-loadedwordsareoftencloselyrelatedtothetraditions,values,customs,andhabitsofaspecificculture,andtherearesignificantdifferencesintheseaspectsamongdifferentcultures.Forexample,intraditionalChineseculture,theowlisoftenregardedasaninauspicioussymbol.Thereisasaying,"Whenanowlentersahouse,itnevercomeswithoutbringingsomethingbad."Itisbelievedthattheowlcanbringmisfortuneanddisasters.Thismayberelatedtoitslivinghabitsanduniqueappearance.Itisactiveatnightandhasastrangecry,whichmakespeoplefeelthatitismysteriousandsomewhatterrifying.InWesternculture,theowlusuallyrepresentswisdom.InancientGreekmythology,oneofthesymbolsofthegoddessofwisdom,Athena,istheowl.Itisconsideredtopossesskeeninsightandprofoundwisdom.Therefore,insomeWesternliteraryworksandartisticimages,theowloftenappearsasasmartandwisefigure.Thesamevisualizedwordhascompletelydifferentculturalconnotationsandexpressesentirelydifferentmeanings,whichreflectsthedifficultyintranslatingculture-loadedwords.Itcanbeseenthatthereareobviousdifferencesintheexpressionofwordconnotationsamongdifferentcultures.Thesedifferencesinculturalconnotationsmakeitdifficulttofindcompletelyequivalentwordstoconveythemeaningoftheoriginalwordduringtranslation.3.2.2SemanticComplexityCulture-loadedwordsoftenhavemultiplemeaningsandrichsemanticlayers.Indifferentsemanticcontexts,thesamewordislikelytoexpresscompletelydifferentmeanings.Thesemeaningsaredifficulttofullyconveythroughsimpleliteraltranslationduringthetranslationprocess.Instead,itisnecessarytounderstandandthenparaphrasebasedondifferentcontexts.Forexample,wordslike"YinandYang"and"FengShui"containrichphilosophicalideasandtraditionalculturalcharacteristics.Butiftheyaresimplytranslatedintosimplegeographicalthingslikewindandwater,theirculturalconnotationswillbelost.Similarly,the"redenvelope"symbolizesblessingsandgoodluckinChineseculture.However,ifitisdirectlytranslatedas"redenvelope",foreignreadersmaynotunderstandtheculturalmeaningbehindit.3.2.3SelectionofTranslationStrategies Translationstrategiesarethecontentthattranslatorsmustunderstandandlearnwhenconductingforeignpublicitytranslation.Makingcorrectandappropriatechoicesoftranslationstrategiescanhelpusavoidmanytroublesduringthetranslationprocess.Moreover,differentwordsandcorporaaresuitablefordifferenttranslationstrategies,andwecannotconfusethem.Itisreasonabletoselectthemostappropriatetranslationstrategyaccordingtothecharacteristicsofdifferentwordssoastoachieveabettertranslationeffect.Commonlyusedtranslationmethodsincludeliteraltranslation,freetranslation,transliteration,etc.Thesedifferenttranslationmethodsandstrategieseachhavetheirownadvantagesanddisadvantagesinthetranslationpracticeofculture-loadedwords,andweshouldchoosethemcarefully.3.2.4LackofCulturalBackgroundThetargetaudienceofpublicitytranslationusuallyconsistsofreadersfromdifferentculturalbackgroundswhomaylackunderstandingofthesourcelanguageculture.Translatorsneedtosupplementnecessaryculturalbackgroundinformationinthelimitedtexttohelpreadersunderstand.Forexample,the"24SolarTerms"arethecrystallizationoftraditionalChineseagriculturalcivilization,butforeignreadersmayknownothingaboutthem.Whentranslating,itisnecessarytoaddannotationsorbackgroundintroductionsinthetext;otherwise,readersmaynotunderstandtheirsignificance.Someculture-loadedwordswithregionalcharacteristics,suchas"hutong"and"siheyuan",requireannotationsorexplanationstohelpforeignreadersunderstandtheirculturalbackgrounds.3.2.5TheDiversifiedMeaningsEndowedbytheChangesoftheTimesCultureisdynamicallydeveloping,andtheconnotationsanddenotationsofculture-loadedwordswillalsochangewiththedevelopmentofthetimes.Translatorsneedtoconstantlyupdatetheirunderstandingofthesewordstoensuretheaccuracyandtimelinessoftranslation.Forexample,"InternetPlus"isanemergingculture-loadedword,anditsconnotationisconstantlychangingwiththedevelopmentoftechnology.Whentranslating,itisnecessarytoadjustaccordingtothespecificcontext.Thecelebrationmethodsofsometraditionalfestivalsarealsoconstantlyevolving.Forexample,thecelebrationmethodsofthe"SpringFestival"havegraduallyaddednewformssuchasonlineNewYeargreetingsande-redenvelopestothetraditionalpracticesofpastingSpringFestivalcoupletsandsettingofffirecrackers.Thesechangesneedtobeconsideredduringtranslation.3.2.6SensitivityinCross-culturalCommunicationIncross-culturalcommunication,thetranslationofculture-loadedwordsrequiresspecialattentiontoculturalsensitivitytoavoidmisunderstandingsoroffenses.Forexample,whentranslatingsomereligious-relatedwords,suchas"AmitabhaBuddha(阿弥陀福)",itisnecessarytoconsidertheculturalbackgroundofthetargetlanguagetoavoidreligiousmisunderstandings.Forwordsrelatedtoethnicorregionalcharacteristics,suchas"ethnicminorities",theyneedtobehandledwithcaretoavoidculturalbiasesormisunderstandings.4.TranslationStrategiesForeignpublicitytranslationisanimportantmeansofspreadingacountry'sinformation,culture,etc.toforeigncountries.Inthisprocess,theapplicationoftranslationstrategiesisofvitalimportance.Foreignpublicitytranslationrequirestheaccuratetransmissionofinformationinthesourcelanguagetothetargetlanguageaudience.Appropriatetranslationstrategiescanhelpovercometheobstaclesbroughtaboutbylanguageandculturaldifferences,ensuringthattheinformationisnotmisunderstoodordistorted.Differenttranslationstrategieswillhavedifferentimpactsonthecommunicationeffect.Accordingtothecharacteristicsandreceptionhabitsofthetargetaudience,choosingsuitabletranslationstrategiescanimprovetheattractivenessandacceptabilityoftheinformation.4.1LiteraltranslationLiteraltranslationisatranslationapproachwhere,aslongasitdoesn'tgoagainstthegrammaticalrulesofthetargetlanguage,thetranslatortriestomaintainthelanguagecontentandformofthesourcetexttothegreatestextentpossibleduringthetranslationprocess.Thisinvolvesdirectlytransformingspecificwordsandsentences(ZhuLili,2022,pp.40-43).Literaltranslationhasitsownbenefitsandcannotbeeasilyreplaced.Oneofitsmainadvantagesliesinitsabilitytostaytruetotheoriginaltextandpreserveculturalfeatures.Foreignpublicitytranslationisspecificallytargetedataudiencesfromdifferentculturalbackgrounds.Insuchasituation,culture-loadedwordsneedtokeeptheiruniqueculturalcharacteristicstobetterfulfillthegoalofforeignpublicitytranslation.It'sclearthatliteraltranslationcan,tosomedegree,retaintheseculturalcharacteristics.Moreover,becauseliteraltranslationisoftenaword-for-wordtranslation,theresultingtranslationisusuallymorestraightforwardandeasytounderstand,whichisbeneficialforcomprehensionandcommunication.Culture-loadedwordsareusedinforeignpublicitytranslationmainlytohelppeoplewithdifferentculturalperspectivesunderstandthecontentofthesourceculture.Thesimplicityandclarityofliteraltranslationmakethisunderstandingprocesseasier.Forexample,using"loong"insteadofthecommonEnglishwordtotranslate"dragon"can,toalargeextent,maintainthespecialpositionthatthedragonholdsinChinesecivilization.However,duetoitsrathersimpletranslationprocessanddirecttranslationmethod,literaltranslationhassomelimitationswhenitcomestoexpressingculturalconnotations.Itmightcauseculturalmisunderstandingsandisunabletoconveytherichculturalbackgroundhiddenbehindthewords.However,afterthousandsofyearsofdevelopmentandinheritance,Chineseteaceremonycontainsrichculturalconnotations.Itisalivingartandculturalphenomenonthattakesteaasamediumandintegratesphilosophy,aesthetics,etiquette,moralityandotheraspectsofconnotations.Therefore,thestudyofteaisnotjustaboutsimplyresearchingteavarieties,themethodsofbrewingtea,andtheselectionofteabrewingutensils.Italsoinvolvesstudyingtheculturaletiquetteattheteatableandtherichculturalspiritbehindtheteaculture.Forexample,theteaceremonyemphasizestheharmoniousunitybetweenmanandnature,aswellasamongpeople.Intheteaceremony,thisismanifestedintheharmonybetweentea,water,teautensils,andtheenvironment,aswellastheharmoniousrelationshipbetweenthehostandtheguests.Bytastingtea,aharm
